Cool Math Games (branded as Coolmath Games)[a] is an online web portal that hosts HTML and Flash web browser games targeted at children and young adults. Cool Math Games is operated by Coolmath LLC and first went online in 1997 with the slogan: "Where logic & thinking meets fun & games".[2][3][4][5] The site maintains a policy that it will only host games that the operators believe are non-violent and educational.[2]

In November 2018, its parent company, Constructive Media, LLC, was acquired by Sandbox & Co. (a division of Sandbox Group) from private equity firm H.I.G. Capital.[6]

In November 2019, Popular Mechanics listed Cool Math Games as one of its "50 most important websites" since the internet was created.[7]

In September 2022, Coolmath Coding was launched to teach kids how to code in Roblox and Minecraft.[8]

Coolmath Games Guidelines

[edit]

Content Screening

[edit]

According to the Coolmath Games Parents page, each game is reviewed by the site’s internal games team before being published. The review process excludes any games that contain violence, blood, gore, alcohol or drug use, adult or sexual content, religious or political themes, profanity, or foul language.[9]

Player Safety and Communication

[edit]

Coolmath Games includes features to prevent direct communication or sharing of personal information among players. Freeform chat is not available in any game. In certain multiplayer titles, users can send emojis or select from a list of pre-screened phrases. Usernames in these games are automatically generated and do not contain personal information.[9]

The platform also states that users are never required to provide personal information, such as their real name or email address, to play games.[10]

History

[edit]

Shutdown hoax

[edit]

Rumors began spreading in mid-2019 that Cool Math Games was to shut down in 2020 due to the discontinuation of Adobe Flash Player. In light of these rumors, a petition was created on Change.org to stop it from shutting down and gained 100,000 signatures.[4][11][5][12] However, Cool Math Games confirmed that it would not be shutting down and was focusing on getting new HTML5 games and converting old Flash games to HTML5 after Adobe Flash reached its end-of-life in 2020.[5][4] The website opted to use emulation technologies like Ruffle to continue using and viewing legacy flash content.[13][14]

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

[edit]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cool Math Games' popularity increased, having been played by students whilst in lockdown and self-isolating.[15][16] The site's Alexa ranking also went up.[17]

Reception

[edit]

Coolmath Games has received a generally positive reception. The Daily Dot called the website's library of content "impressive" in a run-down of the best games on the site.[18]

Games

[edit]

Games series on Coolmath Games include:

  • Papa Louie - A series of time management games created by Flipline Studios, in which the player is tasked with running one of Papa Louie's various fast food restaurants. Currently, only fourteen Papa Louie games are included on Coolmath Games, including Papa's Pizzeria, their first installment in 2007 (later released on Coolmath Games on October 10, 2011), Freezeria, Scooperia, Cupcakeria, Burgeria, Cheeseria, PanCakeria, Hot Doggeria, Bakeria, Taco Mia!, Donuteria, Sushiria, Wingeria, and Pastaria.[19]
  • Fireboy and Watergirl - Set of six cooperative puzzle platformer games created by indie game developer Oslo Albet and released between 2009 and 2021. There are two main characters, Fireboy (who can be moved by using the arrow keys) and Watergirl (who can be moved using the WASD keys). Fireboy can only go through lava, whereas Watergirl can only go through water. If either Fireboy or Watergirl touch the opposite element, they will die and the level will have to be restarted. Green acid can kill both characters. Originally released on the website on March 1, 2012.[20]
  • Cut the Rope - A series of physics-based puzzle video games developed and published by ZeptoLab. On each stage, a candy is hung by one or several ropes, which the player can cut. The goal of each stage is to get the candy to a green monster named Om Nom by cutting the ropes in a particular order while utilizing the game's physics to get the candy to Om Nom. This game was initially released on iOS on October 4, 2010, it would be ported to Coolmath Games on April 4, 2023. Alongside the original game, four other games in the series are included on Coolmath Games including Experiments, Time Travel, the sequel, and Magic.[21]
  • Poptropica - An online adventure game developed in 2007 by the author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Jeff Kinney. The game primarily focuses on problem-solving through game quest scenarios, called "islands". Each island focuses on a problem that the player must resolve by going through multiple obstacles, collecting and using items, talking to various characters, and completing goals. All islands, upon completion, award "credits," which are non-negotiable currency that may be used to buy costumes and special effects in the Poptropica store. It would be added to Coolmath Games on March 21, 2019.[22]
  • There is No Game - A short 10-15 minute title by French developer Pascal Cammisotto (under alias KaMiZoTo) that won the 2015 Newgrounds Construct Jam competition under the contest theme of 'deception'. There Is No Game is also available as a HTML5 version on various of the most known web gaming platforms, such as Cool Math Games or CrazyGames, keeping the original version easily accessible. Released on Coolmath Games on February 9, 2017.[23][24]
  • Fruit Ninja - A video game developed by Halfbrick Studios originally released on April 20, 2010. In it, the player slices fruit with a blade controlled via the touch screen (or in this case a mouse or a touchpad). As the fruit is thrown onto the screen, the player swipes their finger across the screen to create a slicing motion, attempting to slice the fruit in half. The game was initially released for iPod Touch and iPhone devices before being expanded to other devices and platforms, and was added to Coolmath Games on May 14, 2025.[25]
