Carlis Star were an English indie rock band from Manchester, formed in 2006 by singer, guitarist and songwriter Simon Cowan. Part of Manchester’s mid-2000s alternative scene, the band received radio support from BBC Radio 1 and XFM, press coverage from national and regional outlets, and performed internationally at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas & New York.
Background
[edit]Carlis Star were formed in 2006 and made their live debut at the Night & Day Café in Manchester on 28 November 2006.[1]
BBC Manchester featured the band in a 2007 photo gallery and profile article.[2][3]
The Manchester Evening News described the band as “simply spot on… like Teenage Fanclub meets T-Rex” and highlighted their headline show at Club Academy.[4]
NME listed Carlis Star for the unsigned stage at the Carling Weekend: Leeds Festival in 2007.[5]
The Guardian included the band among finalists for the “Unknown Pleasures” competition linked to Manchester International Festival.[6]
A review on Fresh On The Net later noted that Cowan “used to be the singer and songwriter for Manchester alternative band Carlis Star”.[7]
After the band split in 2009, Cowan began releasing solo material under the name record/start. The project signed to Post/Pop Records and released the album Rock From Afar through the label in 2014.[8] record/start also released material in Japan through the independent label Thistime Records.[9]
Releases and UK activity
[edit]In 2008 the band released the single "Hereby No One". Record of the Day featured the track and noted prior BBC Radio 1 plays from Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens.[10]
Top40-Charts described Carlis Star as “the brainchild of Simon Cowan's bedroom demos” and reported XFM playlist support, BBC airplay and appearances at Leeds Festival, Liverpool Sound City and Club NME.[11]
The XFM playlist for 13 June 2008 included “Hereby No One”.[12]
SXSW
[edit]Carlis Star performed at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, in March 2008. A showcase listing placed them on a bill with Ed Harcourt, Ben’s Brother, The Law, Gravenhurst and The Story Of.[13]
They also appeared in SXSW round-ups on BrooklynVegan[14] and DoneWaiting.[15]
Media usage
[edit]The track "Horror of It All" appeared in Hollyoaks Episode 3334 (3 May 2012).[16]
"Hereby No One" was also used in an advertisement for De Montfort University in Leicester.[17]
Later years
[edit]BBC Manchester reported that the band entered a hiatus in 2009.[18]
As of the most recent checks, none of the band’s releases appear on major streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon Music.
