Christopher Bennett (born 3 September 1959) is a New Zealand ultra-distance cyclist. In 2025, he was recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest man to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle, after completing a self-supported journey of 29,051 kilometres that was verified on 8 September 2025.[1]

Early life and background

[edit]

Bennett lives in Golden Bay, New Zealand.[2] Prior to his ultra-endurance cycling career, he worked for the World Bank.[3]

In 2018, Bennett suffered a traumatic brain injury following a cycling accident during the Tour Aotearoa. The crash required facial reconstruction surgery and resulted in post-concussion syndrome, which affected his speech, sensory tolerance, and energy levels. Following the accident, Bennett took disability leave and later retired early from work.[3][4]

Cycling career

[edit]

Bennett has competed in ultra-endurance cycling and long-distance events. After his 2018 accident, he returned to endurance cycling, completing a 12,500-kilometre ride across Canada.[3]

He has stated that the idea of a global circumnavigation developed gradually during his recovery, with encouragement from his wife, Lis Pedersen.[2]

Circumnavigation of the globe (2025)

[edit]

Bennett began his around-the-world cycling journey in May 2025, starting in Helsinki, Finland. He completed the ride on a self-supported basis, carrying his own equipment and independently sourcing food and accommodation throughout the journey.[3]

The route passed through Europe, Australia, Central Asia, China, North America, and returned to Europe, covering a total distance of 29,051 kilometres in 129 days, 18 hours and 20 minutes.[1][2]

During the journey, Bennett averaged approximately 232 kilometres per day and encountered challenges including extreme weather, remote terrain, mechanical failures, and the ongoing effects of his brain injury.[3][5]

Record status and recognition

[edit]

Bennett’s circumnavigation was recognised by Guinness World Records under an age-based record category.[1]

Personal life

[edit]

Bennett has spoken publicly about living with a traumatic brain injury and the strategies he uses to manage its effects while undertaking endurance cycling. He has described the circumnavigation as a personal challenge undertaken while managing the effects of his injury.[3][4]

Philanthropy

[edit]

In 2024, Bennett established an academic award in transportation engineering at the University of Auckland. The award supports New Zealand students studying road safety and transport infrastructure management.[6]
