David Grossman (born c. 1957) is an American music industry executive, author, and professional musician. He is best known for serving as the Senior Vice President of Television Music at Paramount Pictures for 17 years and as the Executive Vice President of The Recording Academy.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Grossman was born in Rochester, New York.[3] He began his musical career at age 17 as a drummer for the international performing arts group Up with People.[4] He attended the Berklee College of Music, graduating in 1979 with a degree in music composition.[5] He later earned a Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University.[2]
Career
[edit]Early career and Paramount Pictures
[edit]Grossman began his career as a professional studio musician in Los Angeles before transitioning to corporate management at Columbia Pictures Television in 1986.[6] He later joined Paramount Pictures Television Music, where he served as Senior Vice President for 17 years. In this role, he oversaw music production and licensing for television series including Star Trek: The Next Generation, Frasier, Cheers, and Entertainment Tonight.[2] During his tenure, productions under his supervision earned nine Emmy Awards and over 30 nominations.[7]
The Recording Academy and Symphony leadership
[edit]In 2006, Grossman was appointed Executive Vice President of The Recording Academy, reporting to President Neil Portnow.[7] He managed business development and artist relations for the organization until 2011, when he was named Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Symphony.[8] Under his leadership, the symphony achieved a four-star rating from Charity Navigator.[2] He resigned from the symphony in 2014.[9]
Later work and teaching
[edit]In 2016, Grossman was appointed Director of Community Engagement for the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts.[1] He is a faculty member at Santa Barbara City College, where he teaches "The Business of Music."[10]
