Duo Security, Inc. is an American cybersecurity company that provides cloud-based access security, identity management, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) services. The company’s software verifies user identities and evaluates the security posture of their devices before granting access to applications. Duo Security is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cisco Systems, which agreed to acquire it in 2018 for US $2.35 billion.[1]
History
[edit]Duo Security was founded in 2010 by Dug Song and Jon Oberheide in Ann Arbor, Michigan.[2] In February 2012, Duo secured a $5 million funding round with contributions from Google Ventures, True Ventures, and Resonant Venture Partners.[3]
By 2016, Duo expanded beyond two-factor authentication (2FA), adding device-trust features and adaptive access policies within the emerging field of Zero Trust security. In February 2017, Duo released “Duo Beyond,” a commercial implementation of Google’s BeyondCorp security framework intended to extend its access security offerings beyond traditional two-factor authentication.[4]
In October 2017, Duo raised $70 million in a Series D funding round led by Meritech Capital Partners and Lead Edge Capital at a post-money valuation of approximately $1.17 billion, bringing the company’s total capital raised to about $119 million.[5]
In August 2018, Cisco announced its intent to acquire Duo Security for US $2.35 billion;[6] the acquisition closed on October 1, 2018, integrating Duo into Cisco’s Security Business Group as part of its broader Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and Zero Trust strategy. [7] At the time of the Cisco transaction, TechCrunch reported Duo had about 700 employees and offices in the U.S. and London, while remaining headquartered in Ann Arbor.
In early 2021, Duo Security introduced infrastructure-agnostic passwordless authentication capabilities to enable users to log in without passwords using security keys or platform biometrics as part of its broader zero-trust security offerings.[8]
In October 2022, Dug Song, co-founder of Duo Security and then Cisco Security Chief Strategy Officer, left Cisco after four years with the company following its 2018 acquisition of Duo.[9]
In August 2023, Cisco’s Duo Security experienced a major authentication outage that lasted several hours and temporarily prevented some customers from accessing systems protected by Duo multi-factor authentication.[10]
In May 2025, Cisco expanded the Duo product line with the introduction of Duo Identity and Access Management (IAM), a broader identity and access management solution designed to address persistent identity-based security threats alongside existing authentication capabilities.[11]
Security and compliance
[edit]Duo’s platform applies Zero Trust principles, requiring continuous authentication and device validation across applications and endpoints. Duo outlines its operational practices and incident response framework on its public Security & Reliability page.[12] The company’s cloud service, achieved FedRAMP authorization for use in U.S. federal environments on November 15, 2019.[13]
By 2022, Duo Security began shifting its product strategy away from traditional "binary" authentication (simply granting or denying access) toward a "continuous verification" model designed to address the complexities of hybrid work environments.[14]
Products and services
[edit]Duo’s cloud-based platform helps organizations verify user identities and device health before granting access to applications. Key offerings include:
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): supports verification via push notifications, passcodes, and platform authenticators.[15]
- Single Sign-On (SSO): enables centralized authentication to multiple applications.[16]
- Passwordless authentication: supports FIDO2/WebAuthn-based sign-in methods.[17]
