Edon Rizvanolli (born 1972 in Pristina, Kosovo) is a Kosovan-Dutch actor, film director, and screenwriter. He is best known for his feature directorial debut, Unwanted (T'padashtun, 2017), which served as Kosovo's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.[1] In 2024, he gained further international recognition for his lead performance in The Tower of Strength (Obraz), for which he received several Best Actor awards at international festivals.[2][3]

Early life and education

[edit]

Rizvanolli was born in Pristina. Following the outbreak of the Yugoslav Wars in 1992, he moved to Austria, where he began his acting career with a theater troupe in Salzburg.[4] From 1996 to 1998, he lived in New York City to study method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.[5]

Career

[edit]

After his studies, Rizvanolli worked in Vienna as a theater actor, performing with the theater group Toxic Dreams in productions including The American Princess (1999).[6] He returned to Kosovo in 1999 to direct documentaries and music videos. He eventually relocated to Amsterdam in 2007, where he established himself within the Dutch film industry.[7] He is a polyglot, performing in Albanian, German, English, Dutch, South Slavic languages, and Turkish.[4]

In television, Rizvanolli has appeared in several international productions, including the British series The Diplomat (2023) and the Swiss crime series Wilder (2020), where he portrayed the character Enver Kabashi.[8]

His 2017 film Unwanted (T'padashtun) premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. For the film, Rizvanolli was awarded Best Screenplay at the Tirana International Film Festival.[9] The film won the Audience Award at the South East European Film Festival in Los Angeles and received a Golden Calf nomination for Best Supporting Actress.[10][11]

In 2024, Rizvanolli played the lead role of Nuredin Doka in Nikola Vukčević's The Tower of Strength (Obraz). His performance earned him Best Actor honors at the Rabat, Slemani, and Linares International Film Festivals.[3]

Critical reception

[edit]

Rizvanolli's performance in The Tower of Strength was noted for its emotional restraint. Writing for Cineuropa, Marko Stojiljković observed that Rizvanolli possessed the "presence to make the ethical dilemma work" during the film's central stand-off.[2] Regional critics further highlighted his ability to convey the character's internal conflict through physical presence rather than extensive dialogue.[4]

Regarding his directorial work on Unwanted, Monica Meijer wrote for Cinemagazine that the film "sensitively treats the differences between the generation that experienced the war firsthand and the generation that followed."[12] In her review for Filmkrant, Sandra Heerma van Voss noted that Rizvanolli intended to give a voice to the estimated 20,000 women raped during the war in Kosovo, observing that the film arrived as the country was ready to "break the taboo around this collective trauma."[13] Van Voss further described Rizvanolli as a "multitalented" addition to both Dutch and Kosovar film culture, particularly praising his performance as Ana's father as one of the film's "best, most charged roles."[13]
