Fadous (Arabic: فدعوس) is a historic coastal locality in the Batroun District of North Governorate, Lebanon, associated with the modern municipality of Kfarabida. The area has been documented by linguists and archaeologists for its historical continuity, social and commercial features, and archaeological significance, leading to the combined designation "Tell Fadous–Kfarabida."
Etymology
[edit]Historical and linguistic sources suggest that the name Fadous may have a Syriac origin. Anis Freiha proposed that it derives from peda, meaning a blow to the head or head wound.[1]
History
[edit]Settlement in the Fadous area increased during the late Ottoman period, particularly in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as coastal travel between Tripoli and Beirut expanded beyond fortified urban centers.
Scholarly descriptions
[edit]Michel T. Feghali, in his 1919 book Le parler de Kfarabida, describes Fadous as a coastal quarter of Kfarabida, noting its shops, cafés, and role in local commerce prior to World War I.[2]
Hélène Sader, in Baal (2005), analyzes the historical toponym, noting that Fadous represents the older core of the modern town and continues to appear on official maps, signage, and archaeological surveys. She notes that this continuity led to the combined designation "Tell Fadous–Kfarabida."[3]
Modern references and signage
[edit]The entrances to Fadous are marked by boundary markers from different administrative periods. Stone markers date to the late Ottoman Mutasarrifate of Mount Lebanon, while metal signs date to the French Mandate period. Post-independence Lebanese maps and surveys continue to identify the locality as Fadous.[4]
Cartographic mentions
[edit]Fadous is documented in 19th- and early 20th-century cartographic sources, including British Admiralty hydrographic charts, European maps, and Ottoman administrative records.[5][6][7]
