WhatsApp GB also known as GBWhatsApp, is the unofficial version of the WhatsApp messaging service made for Android.

History

[edit]

In 2019, GBWhatsApp was in use alongside other modified WhatsApp clients, including WhatsApp Plus.[1][2] In May 2019, Reuters reported that workers for the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress had used clone apps such as GBWhatsApp and JTWhatsApp during the Indian general election. Workers told Reuters the apps were used to forward messages in bulk and to send video files larger than the official client allowed. Reuters described the apps as free, similar in appearance to WhatsApp, and absent from Google's app store. WhatsApp told the agency that users of unofficial apps could be banned.[1]

On 2 August 2019, the GBWhatsApp developers posted that development had ended. The notice, reported by technology sites, said the site and social accounts had been closed and that there would be no further development.[2][3] A notice on XDA Developers, signed "Team GBMods", asked later editors not to use the GBTeam name.[4] Files labelled GBWhatsApp have since been posted by other distributors. WhatsApp does not list the app as one of its products.[5]

Features

[edit]

Reports on the app describe functions not offered, or not then offered, in the official client. These include custom themes, options to hide online status and read receipts, recovery of deleted messages, downloading of status updates, message scheduling, and use of two accounts on one phone.[6][2] Reuters and Daily Trust have also reported higher limits on broadcasts and media file size.[1][6] WhatsApp does not support these modifications.[5]

Distribution

[edit]

GB WhatsApp is installed by sideloading an APK file. It is not on Google Play or the Apple App Store.[1][5] WhatsApp says Google Play Protect may warn users that an unofficial WhatsApp app is fake, and may disable or uninstall it.[7]

Policy and bans

[edit]

WhatsApp's help centre describes unofficial apps as third-party clients. It says linking an account to one violates the terms of service, and that WhatsApp cannot validate the security or privacy practices of such apps. GB WhatsApp and FM WhatsApp are given as examples.[5]

WhatsApp says unofficial apps may carry malware, that messages and shared files may not remain private, and that an account may be temporarily or permanently banned, or restricted from linking devices. A user may see a message stating that the official app is required to log in, or that they have been logged out for using an unofficial app. The company advises removing unofficial WhatsApp apps before installing the official app, and says it cannot guarantee that chat history will transfer.[5][7] Its guidance on responsible use also says accounts may be banned for using a modified version of WhatsApp, or for bulk and automated messaging.[8]

Security

[edit]

In August 2021, Kaspersky Lab reported that version 16.80.0 of FMWhatsApp, another modified WhatsApp client, included a third-party advertising module containing a Trojan detected as Trojan.AndroidOS.Triada.ef. According to Kaspersky, the Trojan collected device data and downloaded further malware, including programs that could display advertisements, subscribe the device to paid services, or sign in to a WhatsApp account by intercepting the login confirmation.[9][10] WhatsApp lists FM WhatsApp with GB WhatsApp among unofficial apps.[5] The Kaspersky report does not identify GB WhatsApp as the app that carried that Trojan.

Reception

[edit]

Reuters treated GBWhatsApp in 2019 as one of the clone apps used by some Indian party workers to bypass limits on forwarding and file size.[1] Daily Trust has described it as a third party modification built without the permission of WhatsApp's owners that adds functions such as a second phone number and further privacy options, and that is obtained outside Google Play.[6] Reports on the 2019 shutdown noted both the extra functions and WhatsApp's warnings to users of modified clients.[2][3]
