GEF India is an Hyderabad based Indian company engaged in the manufacturing, distribution, and branding of Edible oil.[1][2]
History
[edit]In about 2001, Pradeep Chowdhry established a formal joint venture with Wilmar International in collaboration with two associates in Singapore. The organization was named Acalmar Oils & Fats. Wilmar possessed a 50 percent share, while the remainder was distributed among the three associates.[3][4]
In 2004, Wilmar International established a joint venture with Adani Group on the west coast and with Pradeep Chowdhry-led enterprise on the east coast. Two refineries were established on the east coast in Kakinada and Krishnapatnam, and Acalmar successfully launched a brand named Aadhar Oils.[3] In 2006, Wilmar amalgamated with the Kuok Group's oils, grains, and palm oil plantation enterprise. In August 2009, Pradeep Chowdhry exited the business by selling his stake to Adani Wilmar. The journey of Gemini started from there.[3] And in 2008, GEF India was incorporated by Pradeep Chowdhry. Over time it has expanded its manufacturing capabilities, product range, and geographical reach.[5] In 2010, Ruchi Soya Industries Limited (now Patanjali Foods) purchased 50% stakes from the company.[6]
In the same year, the company introduced its Freedom Healthy Oil brand, subsequently acquiring an oil refinery in Kakinada and establishing a small-scale factory in Krishnapatnam.[1][7] In 2014, a Singapore-based vegetable oil company, Golden Agri-Resources, purchased majority stakes in GEF India, and Ruchi Soya Industries Limited exited from the company.[8][9][10]
In October 2022, the company established a new plant near Hyderabad with an investment of ₹400 crore.[11] In March 2025, GEF India collaborated with Tamil Nadu-based Sree Annapoorna Foods. GEF possesses a 70% holding, and Annapoorna holds a 30% share. With this collaboration the company has entered into the spice market of India.[12]
Operations
[edit]The company has three manufacturing plants on the east coast of India, all of which are near ports. Two of the plants are in Kakinada and one is in Krishnapatnam.[3]
Philanthropy
[edit]In January 2025, GEF India in association with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Dhruvansh NGO, initiated a campaign for the restoration of Kotha Cheruvu lake in Kokapet, Telangana.[13]
