Ian Sanders is a former English rugby union player who played as a **scrum-half**. He played professional rugby between the early 1990s and the mid-2000s, most notably for Bath Rugby, Gloucester Rugby, and Exeter Chiefs.[1] Sanders also represented England at age-grade and England 'A' level and appeared for the Barbarians and a Rest of the World XV.[2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Sanders was educated at St Ives School in Cornwall and later attended Penwith College. He captained Cornwall Schools and represented England at Schools and Colts level before entering the professional game.[3] Prior to turning professional, he served in the police.[4]

Club career

[edit]

Bath Rugby

[edit]

Sanders joined Bath Rugby in the early 1990s and made his senior debut during the 1992–93 season.[5] He was part of several successful Bath sides during one of the club’s most dominant periods, contributing to league and cup-winning campaigns and making regular first-team appearances as a scrum-half.[6]

He also featured in Bath’s victories in domestic cup competitions and sevens tournaments, including the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham.[7]

Sanders played in high-profile cross-code challenge matches against Wigan Warriors, contested under both rugby union and rugby league rules at Main Road and Twickenham Stadium.[8]

Gloucester Rugby

[edit]

Sanders signed for Gloucester Rugby in the late 1990s and made a number of senior appearances in English domestic competitions.[9] He remained involved in representative rugby while contracted to the club.[10]

Exeter Chiefs

[edit]

Sanders later joined Exeter Chiefs, continuing his professional career into the early 2000s. He made multiple first-team appearances before retiring, briefly returning for a second spell prior to his final retirement in 2004.[11]

Representative rugby

[edit]

Sanders represented England at under-16, Colts and under-21 level and was selected for Emerging England in the mid-1990s.[12]

During his time at Bath, he was also called into senior England training squads and was considered for full international selection.[13]

He was selected to play for the Barbarians in a match against Combined Services in 1998.[14]

In 1999, Sanders was selected for a Rest of the World XV in a centenary match against Argentina in Buenos Aires.[15]
