Early life and education
[edit]Born in Mexico City on the 15th March 1944 and graduated as an architect from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).[1] Sainz began his carrer collaborating with Noldi Schreck right after his graduation.
Professional career
[edit]Sainz arrived in Spain in the late 1960s, drawn by the development boom on the Costa del Sol. Becoming disciple of Swiss architect Noldi Schreck, whom he had previously assisted in Schreck's studio in Mexico City.[2]
In 1968, and commissioned by developer José Banús with the influence of Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Sainz and Schreck redesigned Puerto Banús. Rejecting initial high-rise proposals (e.g., six 16-story towers by architect Antonio Lamela) in favor of a low-rise, whitewashed development inspired by traditional Andalusian villages such as Casares. The design featured narrow streets, charming plazas, buildings not exceeding tree height, and seamless integration with the Mediterranean landscape, creating an "austere village" aesthetic that encapsulated luxury in simple, vernacular forms.[2][3][4]
Puerto Banús was inaugurated in May 1970 and quickly became a global symbol of glamour, attracting celebrities and generating significant economic impact (over 1.8 billion euros in annual transactions in later years).[3][2]
In 1971, Sainz founded his own firm in Marbella, known as MS DESIGN & Architecture (MS Arquitectos), with headquarters in Puerto Banús. The studio specializes in high-end residential architecture, urban planning, interior design, and project management, emphasizing timeless elegance, clean lines, functionality, and harmony with the Mediterranean environment.[5]
Over five decades, Sainz has contributed to numerous luxury developments, commercial spaces, golf clubs, and urban planning on the Costa del Sol, and beyond. His works include multiple private residences in Nueva Andalucía, La Zagaleta, Los Monteros, and Marbella Club, as well as renovations of iconic projects[6] Until recent years, His son, Maurice Sáinz, also set standards for continued legacy and leadership at MS DESIGN developing numerous landmark projects.[7]
Sainz has also appeared in multiple interviews, YouTube discussions, and the 2012 reality television series Marbella Mansions (BBC/HGTV), where he discusses luxury properties and his designs. Sharing a clear philosophy: "Architecture is to look with the eyes of the soul."[8]
