Prof. Narendra Kumar Gaurha (26 August 1941 – 10 August 2012) was an Indian sociologist, academic administrator, and educationist. He was the founding Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Dr. Harisingh Gaur University and made significant contributions to sociological studies in India.

Early life and background

NK Gaurha was born on 26 August 1941 in Bilaspur, Central Provinces and Berar (British India). He belonged to a Chhattisgarhi Saryuparin Brahmin family. His parents were farmers.

Academic career

NK Gaurha was associated with Dr. Harisingh Gaur University, where he contributed to the development of sociology as an academic discipline. His roles included:

Founding Head, Department of Sociology and Social Work

Head and Dean, Department of Journalism

Beyond the university, he served as:

President, Madhya Pradesh Sociological Council (for ten years)

Advisor, World Bank

Vice-Chancellor, Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur
