Netanel Epstein (born 14 November 1985) is an Israeli-British cartoonist, animator, and author. He is best known for The Y Files, a weekly English-language comic strip published in Torah Tidbits, the international publication of the Orthodox Union.[1][2][3] In addition to his English-language work, Epstein has authored and illustrated numerous Hebrew educational comic books for children and young readers in Israel.

Early life

[edit]

Epstein was born in the Israeli community of Nahliel to parents who had immigrated from the United Kingdom. He grew up in Givat Ze'ev and later lived in Manchester, England, where he contributed early comic strips to the Jewish Telegraph, marking his first published work.

In 2003, a close friend of Epstein was killed in a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv, an event that influenced his later creative focus. Epstein studied at Yeshivat HaKotel in Jerusalem, where he produced illustrated summaries of Talmudic discussions, and later served in the Israel Defense Forces in the Artillery Corps.

Career

[edit]

The Y Files

[edit]

In 2021, Epstein began producing The Y Files, a weekly comic strip published in Torah Tidbits, an English-language magazine distributed internationally by the Orthodox Union.[1] The series follows a fictional television reporter and his interactions with colleagues and family members, using humor and recurring characters to explore Jewish ideas and contemporary themes.

Published installments of the series include issues such as “Vayishlach Comics,” “Vayigash Comic,” and “Eikev Comic,” among others.[1][2][3] The strip has evolved over time to address a range of subjects, including biblical readings, Jewish history, and ethical teachings, while maintaining a comedic tone.

Hebrew-language comics

[edit]

Alongside his English-language work, Epstein has created numerous Hebrew comics for children and adolescents in Israel. His Hebrew works frequently draw on Jewish philosophy, Hasidic teachings, and the writings of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook.

In 2009, he published the first volume of Haigi'a HaZman, a time-travel comic series exploring Jewish history through fictional narrative. He later produced a biographical comic series about Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu.

Epstein was also commissioned by the Israeli Ministry of Education to create a comic-book adaptation of Maimonides’ Sefer HaMitzvot. Additional works include Haderekh Ha’Aruka-Ketzara, a comic adaptation of the Hasidic text Tanya.

In 2023, Israel National News reported on a public launch event in Jerusalem for one of Epstein’s comic books, highlighting his activity in the Hebrew comics field.[4]

Superhero comics

[edit]

Since 2015, Epstein has written and illustrated Eizehu Gibor (“Who Is a Hero”), a superhero series originally serialized in an Israeli youth magazine. The series was later collected into book form, beginning in 2022.

Animation

[edit]

Epstein studied classical and digital animation at the Israeli Animation College in 2014. His animation work includes traditional hand-drawn animation, digital 2D animation, and stop-motion projects.

He contributed animation to adaptations of the Racheli audio series based on the teachings of Rabbi Shalom Arush, which were distributed online.

Personal life

[edit]

Epstein married artist Bat-El Melamed in 2008. The couple live in Ma’ale Hever and have eight children.
