Early life and education

[edit]

Adams was born in Fort Washington, Maryland, and played football, basketball, and track for South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia.[1][2]

Adams played four seasons (2004-2007) for Concord University, starting as a defensive back in all four. He was a three-time All-WVIAC nominee, having been first-team in two seasons. He was twice given All-Northeast Region honors, as well as being recognized as a team captain. In the 2006 season, he was top 5 in NCAA (DII) in tackles as a DB. In 2008, he earned his bachelor's degree from Concord in Recreation and Tourism Management.[1][3]

Adams also competed in track and field at Concord in the triple jump, and was the 2006 WVIAC runner-up in the event.[3][4]

Coaching career

[edit]

Early coaching

[edit]

Following his graduation from Concord in 2008, Adams served as a student coach in the following season, a position he held for one year.[2]

In the 2009 season, Adams started coaching at SUNY Cortland as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach.[5]

In the following season in 2010, Adams served as a defensive backs coach for Glenville football, a position he held for one season.[6]

At the start of the 2011 season, Adams returned to Cortland as an assistant coach, and as a defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, positions he held through the 2013 season. During this time, he was invited to participate in the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship, as well as the NFL-NCAA Coaches Academy. He also spent time as a coach with the Chicago Bears during the 2013 summer training camp.[2][7]

At the start of the 2014 season, Adams started as a wide receivers coach for Columbia Lions football, a position he held for one season.[8]

Villanova (2015-2021)

[edit]

Adams joined the staff at Villanova in 2015 as a running backs coach and pro liason.[9] He continued in the roles through the 2016 season. In 2017, he was named the special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach, positions he held through 2018. Adams became the defensive coordinator at Villanova starting in the 2019 season and through 2021.[10] Under Adams, Villanova's defense ranked top 10 at the FCS level.[11]

Denver Broncos (2022)

[edit]

After being named the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Temple, Adams left to join the Broncos as an assistant defensive backs coach.[12][11] Under Adams, the Broncos finished the season with the 5th best defensive backs, allowing the fewest receiving touchdowns and ranking top 10 in interceptions.[3]

Penn State (2023)

[edit]

After a season on the Broncos staff, Adams joined with Penn State in 2023 as a defensive analyst and analytics coordinator.[13] Under Adams, the Nittany Lions led the FBS in total defense, allowing only 223.4 yards per game.[3] Penn State was also third in points allowed per game, letting up an average of only 11.4.

Indiana (2024-present)

[edit]

Adams was hired as the safeties and defensive backs coach at Indiana prior to the 2024 season.[14] Under Adams, the 2024 team was top 10 in scoring defense, passing yards allowed, and rushing yards allowed.[3] Following the 2024 season, Adams received a 3-year contract extension through the 2027 season.[15]
