Rex is an Italian household appliance brand.[1]
It was founded in 1933 by Zanussi, which was acquired by Electrolux in 1984.[2] Consequently, the products began to be sold under the two brands side by side, initially as Rex Electrolux in 2004, and then as Electrolux Rex in 2010.[3]
History
[edit]Zanussi, a manufacturer of wood-fired stoves and ovens, entered the household appliance sector in 1933. Antonio Zanussi, the company's founder and owner, decided to brand his new products with a new brand, choosing the name Rex in homage to the Italian ocean liner of the same name.[1] Zanussi then requested and obtained permission from the shipping company Italia Flotte Riunite, owner of the famous ship, to use the name.[4]
The Rex brand immediately achieved great success both in Italy and abroad, especially in Austria and Germany, to the point that the original Zanussi brand faded into obscurity, only being revived for export in the 1960s. The Rex-branded appliances produced by the Friulian company established themselves on the market thanks primarily to their design, for which they were awarded the Compasso d'Oro Award.[1]
In 1984, Zanussi was acquired by the Swedish multinational home appliance manufacturer Electrolux, and the Rex brand withdrew from the consumer electronics sector.[1]
Appliances bearing the Rex brand name alone continued to be marketed until 2004, when the Scandinavian multinational decided to replace it with Electrolux outside Italy. A new, combined brand, Rex Electrolux, was introduced in Italy.[3] Six years later, in 2010, the name was reversed, becoming Electrolux Rex.[3]
