Roger Wade (born 1 March 1966) is a British entrepreneur and investor best known as the founder of the streetwear brand Boxfresh and the retail and leisure concept Boxpark. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has been involved in consumer brands, retail development, consultancy, and venture investment. His work has been covered by national and trade media including Retail Gazette[1], London Evening Standard,[2][3][4] COREcruitment,[5] E2Exchange,[6] Bisnow, CNBC and Retail & Leisure International[7],
Early life and education
[edit]Roger Wade was born in London, England. He studied environmental science at the University of Sussex, graduating in 1988. He later completed executive education programmes at London Business School, alongside further professional development in leadership and business strategy.[8]
Career
[edit]Boxfresh
[edit]In 1989, Wade founded Boxfresh, a British streetwear brand that began with customised T-shirts sold from market stalls. The business expanded into retail and international licensing, opening a flagship store in Covent Garden and developing distribution across multiple markets. In 2005, Boxfresh was acquired by Pentland Brands.
Boxpark
[edit]In 2010, Wade launched Boxpark Shoreditch,[9] a retail and leisure development constructed from repurposed shipping containers.[10] The concept combined independent retail units with food, beverage, and cultural programming, and has been referenced in national coverage as an early example of pop-up retail in the UK.
The Boxpark model later expanded with additional locations in Croydon (2016)[11] and Wembley (2018),[12] evolving into larger food and retail park formats. In 2021,[13] Wade sold a majority stake in Boxpark to Lloyds Development Capital and subsequently became a non-executive director of the business.[14]
Consultancy and advisory work
[edit]Following the sale of Boxfresh, Wade established Brands Incorporated, through which he provided consultancy, licensing, and advisory services to fashion and consumer brands. His views on retail strategy,[15] brand development, and high-street regeneration have been featured in trade publications and industry interviews.
Venture capital
[edit]Wade is chairman of BoxFund VC,[16] a venture capital firm established to support early-stage UK consumer brands. According to the firm, its investment approach focuses on businesses seeking to combine commercial growth with social and environmental considerations.[17]
Awards and recognition
[edit]Projects associated with Wade and Boxpark have received industry recognition. Boxpark was listed among the fastest-growing UK companies by Retail & Leisure International for multiple consecutive years.
In 2022, Wade was inducted into the Evelyn Partners Entrepreneur Hall of Fame, recognising sustained achievement in entrepreneurship and business leadership.
Beyond formal awards, Wade has been invited to speak at several major industry events. He has appeared as a speaker at the World Retail Congress,[18] contributed to the Blue Earth Summit[19] on sustainability and business leadership and curated a masterclass at MAD//Fest London[20] focused on impact and innovation in retail. These engagements reflect his role as a recognised figure in discussions about retail, entrepreneurship, and the future of consumer brands.
Philanthropy and community involvement
[edit]Wade has been involved in initiatives supporting independent retail and high-street vitality in the UK. He has participated in public discussions and campaigns addressing retail policy, business rates, and the sustainability of local commercial environments.[21]
He has also contributed through speaking engagements, industry events, and media commentary focused on entrepreneurship, independent business, and creative retail development.[22]
Public commentary
[edit]Wade has offered commentary on challenges facing the retail and hospitality sectors in national and trade media. His public statements have included discussion of collaboration between landlords, tenants, and policymakers to support long-term sustainability in retail and leisure environments.[23][24]
