Sourhouse is an American kitchenware company based in Asheville, North Carolina, founded in 2020 by Erik Fabian and Jennifer Yoko Olson. The company specializes in sourdough baking tools.[1]

History

[edit]

Sourhouse was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic when Erik Fabian, a former brand marketer for Moleskine, began helping friends with sourdough baking techniques during lockdowns.[1] Fabian had experienced difficulties maintaining consistent temperatures for sourdough starter in his Brooklyn apartment, leading him to experiment with temperature control solutions.[1]

Fabian partnered with Jennifer Yoko Olson, an industrial designer who had worked on furniture and technology products.[1] After moving to Asheville, North Carolina, they developed their first product through nights and weekends of prototyping.[1] The company launched its first Kickstarter campaign in May 2022, raising over $100,000, followed by an additional $30,000 through Indiegogo.[1]

Products

[edit]

Sourhouse's primary products include Goldie, a temperature-controlled device for sourdough starters, and DoughBed, a bread-proofing system.[1] The products are manufactured through Platform88, a network of factories in China that specializes in startup-designed products.[1] When the company explored domestic manufacturing, American options cost approximately four times the price of Chinese production, which Fabian described as making domestic manufacturing "not remotely feasible" for a small business.[1]

Media coverage

[edit]

Fabian has been interviewed by national media outlets as a representative voice for American small businesses in the specialty kitchenware industry, appearing on CNN[2] and NPR[3] programs in 2025.

Reception and recognition

[edit]

Good Housekeeping included Goldie in its 2024 Kitchen Gear Awards.[4] The product has been reviewed by technology and cooking publications including The Kitchn,[5] Wired,[6] and Serious Eats.[7]
