Stuart-Michael Loth is an American publisher, music writer, and independent record-label founder associated with Northern California’s underground music scene in the 1990s.[1][2][3][4][5]
His work encompassed music journalism, radio programming, and independent record production, and was covered by regional publications including the Chico News & Review, Synthesis, and The Argus.[6][7][8][9][2][1] His activities and releases also received mention in national and international music media, including Stereo Review, Maximum Rocknroll, and the book I Slept with Joey Ramone.[3][4][5]

Career

[edit]In the early 1990s, Loth worked at KCSC, the student-run radio station at California State University, Chico. The Orion identified him as KCSC Programming Director.[10] Campus coverage also described him as a disc jockey at the station.[12]
A 1995 profile in Synthesis linked his radio work with broader cultural activity, including concert booking and event coordination.[2]
Writing and publishing
[edit]In addition to his work in radio, Loth founded and edited Forerunners, an independent music zine, which was profiled in regional coverage of Northern California’s underground music and publishing scene.[2][7]
He also wrote about music and culture for The Orion, the student newspaper at California State University, Chico, where he was credited as a staff writer.[11] He additionally held staff roles listed in the paper’s masthead, including positions in the calendar section and circulation.[13]
Independent publications reported on Loth’s activities in the local music scene during the mid-1990s, including his involvement in publishing, student media, and music programming.[6][7][8][9][2]
Smut Pedlurz Disks
[edit]In the mid-1990s, Loth founded Smut Pedlurz Disks, an independent record label based in Northern California. The label was the subject of a 1997 business feature in The Argus that described its niche focus and underground releases.[1]
One release associated with the label, by the band STOP, received a capsule review in Stereo Review in 1996.[3] The label and associated releases were also mentioned in independent punk media including Maximum Rocknroll.[4] A reference to STOP and Smut Pedlurz Disks additionally appears in I Slept with Joey Ramone.[5]
