Taghlib Abdul Hadi Al-Waily تغلب عبد الهادي الوائلي is an Iraqi–Canadian architect, urban planner, and researcher whose professional career spans more than five decades.[1] He is known for his work in heritage-led urban regeneration, particularly through studies and planning proposals related to the revitalization of Baghdad’s historic city center.[2]

Al-Waily co-founded several architectural practices in Abu Dhabi and Baghdad.[3] He later established Turath, a Montreal-based non-profit organization focused on urban heritage.[4] Through this platform, his research and planning proposals were presented to UNESCO and Iraqi governmental bodies.[5]

Education

Al-Waily studied architecture and later completed postgraduate studies in urban and regional planning at the University of Baghdad.[6]

Career

Early work in Abu Dhabi

Between 1977 and 1987, Al-Waily worked at the Public Works Department of Abu Dhabi, where he was involved in the management and coordination of governmental projects in collaboration with international consultants.[7] His role included responsibilities related to design coordination and project management as a client representative on public sector projects.[8]

During the same period, he also practiced as a freelance designer and contributed to architectural and interior design projects in Abu Dhabi and the wider Gulf region.[9]

Dewan Architects and Ritaj Architecture

In 1984, Al-Waily co-founded Dewan Architects in Abu Dhabi, where he was involved in architectural design and professional practice during the firm’s early years.[10]

In 1988, he founded Ritaj Architecture & Interiors, through which he worked on hospitality, residential, and interior design projects in the United Arab Emirates and the region.[11]

Regional planning and urban heritage

In the early 2000s, Al-Waily worked as a planning consultant with firms including Dar Al-Emara and SGI on regional development projects.[12] His work included preparation of the Al-Muthanna Governorate Structure Plan and urban renewal studies for Old Mosul.[13]

From 2009 to 2012, he directed the Al-Rasheed Street Development Project in Baghdad, addressing the revitalization of the street’s historic fabric and its integration with surrounding markets and the Tigris River as part of a broader vision for the historic city center.[14]

Turath – Montreal

After relocating to Canada, Al-Waily founded Turath, a non-profit organization dedicated to urban heritage.[15] Through this organization, he prepared studies and advocacy materials concerning Baghdad’s historic core, which were shared with Iraqi governmental authorities and cultural institutions.[16]

Awards and recognition

Al-Waily has received professional recognition for his work in architecture and urban heritage.[17]

  • Shortlisted for the Mohamed Makiya Prize (Tamayouz Excellence Award, 2019)[18]
  • Honored by the Mayorality of Baghdad (2023) for contributions to urban development
  • Certificate of appreciation from the Iraqi Embassy in London and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2018) for participation in the London Festival of Architecture[19]
