Haldar or Halder (Bengali: হালদার) is a native Bengali surname, found among the Bengali people of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Bangladesh.[1] The surname is commonly used by various Bengali castes such as Gandhabanik, Baishya Kapali, Namasudra, Mahishya, Kaibarta, Sadgop, Barujibi, Karmakar, Tantubanik, Poundra, Tili, Byghra Kshatriya, Brahmin etc.[2]

Indian (West Bengal) and Bangladeshi (also spelled Haldar): probably from Sanskrit haladhara ‘one who holds a plow’, an epithet of the god Balarama, brother of Krishna. Balarama is said to have used a weapon shaped like a plowshare, just like Sikdar, Tarafdar, Dastidar, etc.

The surname can be found among both Bengali Hindus and Muslims.[3]
