Raymond Red (born March 22, 1965)[1] is a Filipino filmmaker.[2] A pioneer of the newly-established alternative movement under Philippine New Wave, he operates film directing, screenwriting, co-photographic and film editing to his independent narrative films that focusing on struggle for survival in the face of corruption, injustice, poverty, and social turmoil.[3][4]
Throughout his career, he made his distinction of being the first Filipino filmmaker to win the prestigious Short Film Palme d'Or award for his short film Anino at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival; as of 2025, Anino is the only Filipino film to receive the highest prize at Cannes.[5][6]
Personal life
[edit]He has a son: Mikhail, who is best known for directing Birdshot (2016), the first-ever Netflix original film from the Philippines.[7]
