The Swan Stakes (Japanese スワンステークス) is a Japanese Grade 2 horse race for Thoroughbreds aged three and over run in October over a distance of 1,400 metres at Kyoto Racecourse.[1]
It was first run in 1958 as a 1800 metre race in spring for older horses before being shortened to 1600 metres in 1972. The race was promoted to Grade 2 in 1984 when it was reduced from 1600 metres to its current distance, moved from spring to autumn, and was opened to 3 year olds as well.[2]
The race also serves as a trial race for the Mile Championship, with the winner of the Swan Stakes being given an entry slot for the race since 2014.[2]
