His training in the cadet corps and service in his regiment gave him a familiarity with army life and military affairs that later was of great use to him as a battle artist. He was nevertheless not enthused over a military career. Drawn to the arts, he began to visit classes in battle painting at the Academy of Arts. His education was so successful that he received the privilege of studying abroad. In 1847 Kotsebu set off for Europe, making trips to various battlefields of the Seven Years War between Russia and Prussia to make studies for a series of paintings that had been commissioned on this conflict. During the revolutions of 1848, when on the orders of Nicholas I all Russian artists studying abroad had to leave Paris, Kotsebu settled in Munich where he worked on his cycle of paintings on the Seven Years War. | ||
