Edit request for the info box

[edit]

Despite being the same city the info box includes the “capital” and “largest city” I recommend we combine the two so it has “capital and largest city” on it as it would a. prevent the exact same redirect from being right next to each other and b. it will be consistent with other Wikipedia articles Gavfor (talk) 21:34, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Correction: Governance and Administrative Structure of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (per WP:V, WP:RS, WP:NPOV)

[edit]

I would like to propose corrections and expansions to the lead section and “Government and politics” section of this article. The current wording describes Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) as a “nominally self-governing entity,” but it omits reliably documented aspects of AJK’s financial and legal governance, which are necessary for compliance with WP:NPOV and WP:DUE.

The following points are supported by government documents, constitutional texts, and reliable secondary sources:

1. Financial Administration Integrated with Pakistan (WP:V, WP:RS)

[edit]

AJK’s financial statements are prepared by the Office of the Accountant General – Azad Jammu & Kashmir, which operates within Pakistan’s federal public financial management framework under the Controller General of Accounts (CGA).

Source:

Government of Pakistan, Controller General of Accounts.

Financial Statements – Azad Jammu & Kashmir (2016–17).

https://cga.gov.pk/SiteImage/Misc/files/FS/AJK/AJK-Council-FS-2016-17.pdf

This demonstrates that AJK’s financial reporting, auditing, and budget structures are coordinated with Pakistan’s federal system and are not autonomous. The current article does not reflect this verifiable structure.

[edit]

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Interim Constitution Act (1974) divides authority between:

  • The AJK Government, and
  • The Azad Jammu & Kashmir Council, historically chaired by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The Law & Parliamentary Affairs Secretariat in Muzaffarabad publishes ordinances under this framework. Example:

Source:

The Azad Government of the State of Jammu & Kashmir, Law & Parliamentary Affairs Secretariat, Muzaffarabad, Ordinance No. 37/SL/78 (7 January 1978).

(Volume V, 1978–79)

Given the constitutional division of powers, describing AJK simply as “self-governing” without noting this dual structure gives undue weight and does not reflect the governance reality documented in reliable sources.

3. Suggested Neutral Revision for the Article Lead (WP:LEAD, WP:NPOV)

[edit]

To reflect verifiable structure without adding synthesis:

“Although described as a nominally self-governing territory, Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s governance is defined by the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Interim Constitution Act (1974), under which authority is divided between the locally elected AJK Government and the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Council. AJK’s financial administration is coordinated through Pakistan’s Controller General of Accounts framework, and its legal system operates through ordinances issued by the Law & Parliamentary Affairs Secretariat in Muzaffarabad.”

All claims in this wording derive directly from WP:RS-compliant official and academic sources.

4. Policy Basis for the Requested Corrections

[edit]
  • WP:V – Verifiability: Financial and legal structures must match published government records.
  • WP:RS – Reliable Sources: CGA financial statements, constitutional documents, and secretariat ordinances meet high reliability standards.
  • WP:NPOV – Neutrality: The current lead presents AJK as more autonomous than verified by sources.
  • WP:DUE – Due Weight: The existing lead places undue emphasis on nominal self-governance and lacks proportionate detail on constitutional and financial oversight by Pakistan.
  • WP:LEAD – Lead Accuracy: The lead must summarise all major structures, including financial and constitutional frameworks.

No original research is being proposed; all statements come directly from verifiable published sources.

5. Request for Feedback

[edit]

I invite editors to review these sources and proposed revisions so that the article can more accurately reflect AJK’s governance structure per Wikipedia policy.

Request to Correct Inaccurate Language and Diaspora Description (WP:NPOV • WP:RS • WP:V)

[edit]

The “Demographics” section currently states:

“The population is diverse, with Urdu and Pahari-Pothwari being the main languages. Many residents, particularly those from the Mirpur district, have roots in the Pakistani community in the UK.”

I request that this sentence be revised, as it contains factual inaccuracies and is not supported by reliable sources.

1. Linguistic Misclassification (WP:RS, WP:NPOV)

[edit]

Published linguistic research classifies the vernacular of Mirpur, Bhimber, and Kotli as part of the Western Pahari group, not “Pothwari” or “Pahari-Pothwari”.

Relevant sources include:

  • Grierson, Linguistic Survey of India, Vol. 9, Part 4 (1916)
  • Shackle (1980), “Problems of classification in Panjabi”
  • Hussain (2015), Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development
  • Chowdhary (2019), Ethnic Politics and Pahari Identity

“Pothwari” refers historically to Rawalpindi Division and is not an indigenous identity term for Mirpur or the wider Jammu region.

Urdu functions mainly as an administrative and educational language rather than a home language.

2. Incorrect Statement on the UK Diaspora (WP:V, WP:NPOV)

[edit]

The text incorrectly claims that Mirpuris “have roots in the Pakistani community in the UK.”

According to migration studies, the reality is the reverse:

  • The diaspora from Mirpur, Bhimber, and Kotli formed some of the earliest South Asian communities in the UK during the 1950s–1970s.
  • See: Ballard (1991), The Kangra Exodus and the Emergence of the British Mirpuri Community.

The current sentence misrepresents the direction of migration and gives undue weight to a claim not supported by reliable sources.

3. Proposed Neutral and Sourced Revision

[edit]

To reflect reliable literature and avoid synthesis, I propose the following wording:

“The population is predominantly Pahari-speaking, with Urdu used primarily as an administrative and educational language. The diaspora from Mirpur, Bhimber, and Kotli constituted some of the earliest South Asian communities in the United Kingdom during the 1950s–1970s.”

This phrasing corrects the factual inaccuracies while remaining neutral and well supported by WP:RS.

I welcome discussion and additional citations from other editors to reach consensus. RYasmeen12 (talk) 16:34, 4 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
