mess.
[edit]I deleted the part that claimed the Frederick Douglas "who lived close by" edited the letter that BB wrote to thomas jefferson because BB died before Douglas was born. I'm going to include some of the info from the "about.com" page on BB to make this article more credible. maybe we can get the African American History expert from About.com to verify/fix the information in this article.
DC Survey Claim Followed By Citations Disproving It?
[edit]The first section of the article has an unsourced claim that he helped Andrew Ellicot survey DC in 1791. In the following section about myths that surround Mr. Banneker there are two sources cited that say there is no evidence he was involved. Seems like something that needs to be sorted out, but this is too controversial a subject for me to just edit it on my own. 2002:496A:3296:0:B443:C252:A609:A355 (talk) 00:11, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Sophisticatedevening (talk) 22:30, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
Change Wording in Banneker's Journals section
[edit]The current text says "On the day of his funeral, a fire destroyed all but one of which Banneker's journals."
I suggest a rewrite of this to "On the day of his funeral, a fire destroyed all but one of Banneker's journals." Bawinstead (talk) 12:37, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
African Origin of "Banaka" name
[edit]The Smithsonian's staff writer Silvio Bedini ("The Life of Benjamin Banneker"), the Benjamin Banneker Museum, and the Maryland Center for History and Culture all cite the extensive research conducted on the possibility of a Senegalese origin. It is the only research that correlates multiple details of Banaka's origin, such as the date of the ship arrival, with linguistic field research in Africa. It is in a peer-reviewed, well regarded journal. But the reference has been erased every time I have attempted to add the citation:
