Authoritarianism add?

[edit]

@Remsense

I dont see why this is such an issue to add authoritarian onto here. I cited a source for it. As for the minor edit part, I missclicked and for that I apologize. ErickTheMerrick (talk) 18:58, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

As stated in my edit summary, "authoritarian" is not a government type. It does not describe any particular aspect of a government's structure or organization. On articles where this is present, I strongly disagree with it, but can only reiterate the argument why it is improper. Remsense ‥  22:45, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The reason it is in other articles is because your interpretation is not what is held by the wider world Which Countries Have Authoritarian Governments in 2024? Moxy🍁 04:32, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A government can behave in an authoritarian manner, but the word does not indicate any specific information about how a government is structured or how it functions—the page you link does a good job of illustrating this. A label that applies equally vaguely to Saudi Arabia, Russia, the CAR, and Cuba just isn't doing much except casting vibes here. Remsense ‥  04:37, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We should write to Oxford university letting them know they're wrong [1] Moxy🍁 04:51, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Moxy, I apologize if I'm irritating you, especially since I really enjoy discussions involving you and I would like that feeling to be mutual—but are you reading the sources you're posting here? The worldpopulationreview joint repeats over and over there is no specific structural or functional properties described by authoritarian, and this entry does much the same! I do not think we should not use this word or cite sources that use it in analysis, but it is simply not referring to anything in particular as a government type.Remsense ‥  04:56, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My main concern is not regurgitating the sources because of how you feel of it being vague. Not our place to decide the media and academics are using a vague term. Moxy🍁 05:01, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We should be providing sources to our readers so they can do their own research and evaluations. Sources should not be omitted simply because of perceived ambiguity. We are here as a terrestrial source providing information to more extensive publications. Moxy🍁 05:10, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's not that it is vague—republic is vague, but it belongs here—it's that it does not indicate anything within the bounds of what this parameter is meant to describe. I'm not ignoring that sources use the term, I'm listening to what they are trying to articulate when they use it. Remsense ‥  05:17, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We'll have to simply disagree as many sources out there would be beneficial to our readers. We should provide our readers with academic publications...... They should not be omitted simply because of your point of view.... Heavily covered topic for the country but somehow it's not mentioned at all. Harkness, Kristen A. (2020-12-17). "Cameroon: The Military and Autocratic Stability". Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Politics. Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/acrefore/9780190228637.013.1800. ISBN 978-0-19-022863-7. Moxy🍁 05:27, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I do not want to hide anything, I just don't want to put the square peg in the round hole. Use the word once per paragraph if that is what the sources demand, but I've tried to make clear that that's not my issue. Remsense ‥  05:29, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear: I would support a label for the government that incorporates minority ethnic dictatorship, following another article by Harkness.[1] This term far more clearly refers to specific structures and mechanisms within the government.Remsense ‥  05:59, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@ErickTheMerrick what part of this discussion made you think there was consensus for your changes to be reinstated unaltered? Remsense ‥  00:06, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Moxy’s replies, that it is accurate, and that I have sources so there’s no reason not to add it. Your argument of “It’S nOt A fOrM oF gOvErNmEnT” falls on its face when you realize the most countries who have authoritarian governments’ wiki pages have authoritarian in their government infoboxes. ErickTheMerrick (talk) 01:59, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sources do not guarantee inclusion. CMD (talk) 02:05, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I know that, that’s not Remsense’s issue (as they said up above). Their issue is if it should even be added at all. ErickTheMerrick (talk) 03:42, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I feel this still needs to be added. ErickTheMerrick (talk) 19:01, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We know. Remsense ‥  19:02, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Can’t we reach an agreement here? ErickTheMerrick (talk) 19:35, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you refer to your first direct reply to me here, you may understand why I'm pessimistic about that, as you have not indicated that you even take my attempts to articulate my position seriously. Maybe I am being hypocritical, but I struggle to find where you've articulated your own position in kind. Remsense ‥  20:04, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My position is that it is an authoritarian dictatorship and therefore, should be labeled as such in the infobox ErickTheMerrick (talk) 19:34, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I know. I have already given my position, and you have not really engaged with it. I am attempting to be as level-headed as possible here when I reiterate that your conception of what should go in the infobox—e.g. what are the key facts of a topic, to be communicated at a glance—is far beyond what many experienced editors think it is capable of containing, in line with its purpose. I do not know how better to get this across; I keep gesturing to both policy and illustrative examples that have resulted from deliberate consensus, but want to avoid bludgeoning. Remsense ‥  19:43, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well I don't know what to tell you, there are plenty of Wikipedia pages mentioning authoritarianism in their respective government infoboxes, so I don't get the push back against adding it here. ErickTheMerrick (talk) 15:43, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Many articles do poor things, their infoboxes more so. I read the push back as being explained in Remsense's 13 January post. CMD (talk) 18:43, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the Anthem Deleted?

[edit]

Really? For the one time, Cameroon has no anthem in wikipedia right now. I'm even closed up what's happening? Is it some kind of copyright by Cameroon or something? Thsharkeslayor8058 (talk) 07:24, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article currently has Template:Use British English, but English is one of the official languages of Cameroon and Cameroonian English is a recognised variety. Because of this, I've created Template:Use Cameroonian English to specify variety per MOS:TIES, and I will add this to the article. Pineapple Storage (talk) 14:22, 29 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"More sources needed" orange banner

[edit]

@AlphaBetaGamma: You added a "more sources needed" orange banner to this article. Since this is a featured article, do you think that this needs to go to WP:FAR? Z1720 (talk) 19:24, 26 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the issue is so deep down we need a FAR to patch it up, as we just have two short claims that need sourcing. However Cameroon is completely out of my scope, and we're in a holiday season so I doubt that a random person will come up and fix it. AlphaBetaGamma (Talk/report any mistakes here) 10:49, 27 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is an older and not well-maintained FA, unfortunately, even out of holiday seasons. CMD (talk) 23:47, 27 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@AlphaBetaGamma and Chipmunkdavis: FAR requires a two-week notice period for an article before it is posted there, and Madagascar is currently posted there. Perhaps what we could do is let this message serve as the "notice" and if no one offers to make improvements, someone can post this at FAR when Madagascar is finished? Z1720 (talk) 23:50, 27 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm hella busy on January due to exams, mock tests, and the STEP Eiken Grade 1 test, so I don't know if I'll remember. AlphaBetaGamma (Talk/report any mistakes here) 01:15, 28 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No rush to FAR. CMD (talk) 03:41, 28 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
