To the 'formation' section of the infobox, please add this:

| established_event5 = [[Constitution of China|Current constitution]]
| established_date5 = 4 December 1982

Per consensus, 'formation' includes the latest constitutions used by states. TheodoresTomfooleries (talk) 06:43, 29 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Did establish today's legal entity the article is referring to; consistency across articles which is the point of infobox templates. EnTerbury (talk) 20:28, 22 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Fact Correction

[edit]

change "across an area of 9.6 million square kilometers (3,700,000 sq mi), making it the third-largest country by area." to "across an area of 9.6 million square kilometers (3,700,000 sq mi), making it the fourth-largest country by area." Ghlat2 (talk) 22:44, 1 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is a note in the article explaining why China is ranked the third. ~2025-41932-19 (talk) 05:01, 21 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hatnote

[edit]

Hi @The Account 2. I kinda expected this to happen. My edit tried to solve two problems:

  1. The hatnote says "People's Republic of China" and "PRC" redirect here., but then goes on to list three things that can't reasonably be confused with "People's Republic of China". The disambiguation pages are for "China" and "PRC", not "People's Republic of China". Thus, I prefer "Several terms redirect here", which is also more concise.
  2. 中国 redirects here, but that is also the name of the Japanese province. I was looking at sources for Vehicle registration plates of Japan, which used 中国 for a region of Japan, and I couldn't figure out which region it was because 中国 simply takes me to the China article with no hatnote. (Same on zhwiki, by the way, but not on jawiki, which has a humongous hatnote.) This is...not helpful.

In my view, just because this article is far more important than the other one doesn't mean we should ignore our rules on disambiguation and leave some readers in the lurch. Toadspike [Talk] 09:11, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, my concerns were more about WP:UNDUE. How about creating a 中国 (disambiguation) page and including that in the hatnote? Do you think that could work? The Account 2 (talk) 09:14, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I thought of that too. Unless we find a third use of 中国 (which might be possible), that would run afoul of WP:ONEOTHER. Toadspike [Talk] 09:19, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I also don't think UNDUE applies to anything other than the content of an article. Toadspike [Talk] 09:21, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm not that strongly opposed to it. I won't revert if you add it again. The Account 2 (talk) 09:33, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It seems 中国 has also been used to refer to the Central Plain of China, see zh:中原. Since there are three items now, I'll create a disambiguation page. (I admit this is a bit of an obscure use and we're kinda stretching things, but if it makes the hatnote look cleaner I'll take it.) Toadspike [Talk] 10:24, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I think this looks better now; The Account 2 (talk) 10:37, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unrelated, @The Account 2, I think you put this ref in the wrong place [1]. Toadspike [Talk] 10:30, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes lol, thanks for correcting it. Editing large pages can be buggy sometimes. The Account 2 (talk) 10:35, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But why is there a disambiguation page (and a re-direct) in non-Latin script? Surely that breaches WP:TRANSLITERATE: "Names not originally in a Latin alphabet ... must be romanized." Of course, if romanized those two pages are pointless which should tell us they shouldn't exist on en.wp. It should at least be removed from the hatnote. DeCausa (talk) 12:31, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That only applies to articles, not to redirects (and thus, by necessity, also not to disambiguation pages, which are essentially collections of conflicting redirects). This also applies to lists, outlines, indexes, portals, and categories, but not to redirects or disambiguation pages. See WP:RFOREIGN for a longer explanation. As I explained above, I created this hatnote and dab page because as an Anglophone reader I could not discern what article a proper noun in a foreign-language source referred to. Toadspike [Talk] 12:42, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
checking the meaning of such terms is easier on wiktionary. cheers EnTerbury (talk) 19:53, 22 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: This is already mentioned in the body of the article and it seems unnecessary to add something this specific to the lead.
