Footnotes on legal status of euro usage

@JMF: You removed the footnotes on the legal status of the euro usage in Northern Cyprus and Caribbean Netherlands with the comments "the list is of countries where the euro is legal tender. Not places where a hotelier will a happily accept it at a generous markup." How is this relevant? Agreed we should not be listing places where the euro is not legal tender, but these footnotes are directly relevant to the extent to which the euro is legal tender in the listed countries. It was not I who removed the tourist experience nonsense in the first place but I agree[d] with its removal. I'll look at the article again tomorrow but the euro is certainly not legal tender in Northern Cyprus. Perhaps a small baby may have been thrown out with a lot of dirty bath water. @JMF: Again, not quite sure what you're referring to with respect to the tourist experience. I fully agree with you on that point, and it is not related to changes being discussed here.

The only remaining item you and Dasomm keep trying to remove that is in dispute is a note on the legal status of the euro Northern Cyprus: [1]

Based on the comments here, it seems clear that there is no consensus to remove it.

The "tourist experience" means people recording that you can use euros in xyz no problem and that the locals even prefer it. That's de facto and we need to stick to de jure.

Northern Cyprus is difficult because it is recognised by nowhere except Turkey. According to it's infobox, the legal currency (for settlement of taxes, which is as close as we can get) is the Turkish lira. So probably, as is the case in Turkey, tourist venues prefer hard euros to soft liras. Do we have any RS that can say definitively what the position is? As for the footnote (saying that Cyprus is in the eurozone but part of its territory is outside its jurisdiction), is that level of detail really due? So include the British bases to say that the UK is also in the eurozone? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 15:39, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed that we should stick to the de jure status and usage.

Protocol 10 to the EU accession treaty suspends the application of EU acquis to Northern Cyprus, so legally it cannot use the euro.[2] I do think that this exclusion from application from a significant fraction of Cyprus' de jure territory warrants a footnote.
