Requested move 8 October 2026

[edit]

Frank Winter → Frank David Winter – Okay when I found this yesterday evening I had no clue what to put. (Leader? That’s not a title) now I figure I just say his full name. (I removed the un encyclopedia intro of well known) Anyway, it’s not quite a primary, needless to say, the primary should be a disambiguation page. • Comment While I'm not necessarily opposed to the proposed move, I'll note that using middle names simply for disambiguation purposes is not recommended, per WP:MIDDLE. In this case, however, both sources cited in the article indeed use "Frank David Winter". 162 etc. (talk) 02:08, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
TBH I had no clue what to put as the article really never says what title. I considered leader, but that really just sounded weird. I was very iffy about doing first/middle name, but if someone can think of a better one, go ahead! Sirlink2222 (talk) 02:10, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose, per WP:COMMONNAME. His common name is Frank Winter, which is obvious if you read his biography in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography (DNZB), and which is referenced in the article. The DNZB titles all of its articles with the subject's full name, so the article title is not useful in determining the subject's common name; however, the body of the text uses the common name, in this case Frank Winter, throughout. If you have "no clue" as to how to disambiguate a page, as you say above, then may I respectfully suggest that you shouldn't be trying to doing it. Paora (talk) 10:16, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Problem is what is his title? What would you disambiguate him as? Sirlink2222 (talk) 14:53, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose He was known as Frank Winter. Period. If it needs disambiguating, you need to propose a disambiguator. That cannot be a middle name by which he was not known. Schwede66 17:00, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I did put leader but I then removed it and changed it as that just sounded weird. If someone can think of a better one tell me and I might renominate it. Sirlink2222 (talk) 17:01, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
> "He was known as Frank Winter. Period."
Was he though? Both sources cited in the article use "Frank David Winter". 162 etc. (talk) 03:30, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
This comment seems rather harsh. This was clearly an attempt at natural disambiguation, which is a form of disambiguation; it may not have been a good disambiguator, but one was proposed. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 01:00, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don’t mind if this gets removed actually. This was one I was even unsure of nominating as I just can’t figure out what he be disambiguated of, however it does not appear to be a primary topic. Sirlink2222 (talk) 17:04, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I’d disambiguate with "(Ngāi Tahu leader)". To New Zealanders, that would make sense. Schwede66 17:13, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Okay, this should get renominated as that! Sirlink2222 (talk) 17:14, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looking at similar cases, the precedent is Mark Solomon, who was also chair of Ngāi Tahu, who is disambiguated as Mark Solomon (Māori leader). There are no other tribal leaders named Frank Winter who have WP pages, so I don't see a need to disambiguate to the tribal level. Paora (talk) 20:12, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
