Why was tipping illegal in so many US states less than 100 years ago?

[edit]

I was reading this Q&A from the Law Stack Exchange: What happened to the anti-tipping laws? I came to Wikipedia to learn why the laws were there in the first place, but there does not appear to be a treatment of the subject. Maybe a brief history or treatment of illegality would be a good idea. Jeffrey Walton (talk) 04:17, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The webpage you have cited is a good explanation of why the anti-tipping laws died. Why were they created in the first place? One explanation is that, at least in restaurants, employers viewed tips as a bribe to do something that was otherwise forbidden, like giving an unusually large serving of food. This article is cited in the Wikipedia article: [1] There has been discussion in some places about how tipping relates to race, but the states that outlawed tipping included some states with large black populations, as well as some states with (at that time) very small black populations, such as Washington state and Iowa. Tipping by region - Sub-headings in Asia section should be in alphabetical order

[edit]

In my opinion, the country sub-headings on the 'Asia' section of the article should be in alphabetical order as it would make the article look more professional in my opinion. Xboxsponge15 (talk) 23:48, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Estonia

[edit]

"In Estonia, tipping (jootraha) is not required and never expected." - Not true, I can say as an Estonian, especially the "never expected" part. The custom (rare but not completely unknown in the 1980s) became widespread in the 1990s, with the influx of tourists and the rise in the living standards. By 2000, a lot of establishments in the tourist areas of the capital, Tallinn, paid rather little to the waiters (who were often students, especially in the high season during the summers) and expected them to survive on tips only. That wave has receded but tipping is still far from uncommon, although it is usually considered to depend on the customer's free will, income, and satisfaction with the service. There are people who never tip and probably have never seen anyone tipping (especially in the poorer rural regions) but then again, it is widespread among the (upper) middle class. Usually 5-10, less often 15%, it is done mostly in food business, sometimes in hotels and taxis (less now that everyone pays with a card, but some taxi and ridesharing companies have the option in their apps). Right now, due to the pandemics, tips have become rarer but also more important for the service staff. Of course, this is all just my experience and I don't have any sources to back it up. But neither has the current claim. --Ehitaja (talk) 01:05, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tipping in Iceland

[edit]

On the map Iceland is purple, which suggests that tipping in Iceland is insulting. This is untrue. Some decades ago tipping was unusual but never insulting. Today it is rather common to tip and recieve tips. Best regards, Johanna, living and working in Iceland. 85.220.77.39 (talk) 09:53, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The map of Georgia is incorrect

[edit]

The map of Georgia is missing the parts of the country, namely Abkhazia AR. and part of Shida Kartli region occupied by Russia at the moment. Daviti Zhorzholiani (talk) 06:31, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 17 June 2025

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: not moved. Redirected "Tipping" to "Gratuity", but kept "Gratuity" as article title.. (closed by non-admin page mover) Jeffrey34555 (talk) 01:09, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

– Article was moved to Gratuity in 2013, on the basis of WP:NATURAL. Note however that the article focuses on the action of tipping, rather than the tip or gratuity itself. This is certainly the primary topic for "Tipping", nothing particularly notable at the dabpage. 162 etc. (talk) 21:00, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Split proposed

[edit]

This section is just too long and should be a standalone list. 162 etc. (talk) 21:05, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Add external link: tip-percentage calculator

[edit]

I’d like to propose adding a single external link to the “External links” section:

Tip-percentage calculator – interactive tool that demonstrates how to calculate restaurant gratuities and split totals per person

RATIONALE: Educational value – Lets readers experiment with tip-percentage formulas discussed in the article. Non-duplicative – No other external link offers an interactive calculator. Minimal commercial content – Free to use, ad-light, no registration. Transparent math – Formula is simply bill × (1 + tip %) plus optional split.

Thank you for your time. Saqibali554 (talk) 01:54, 28 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: Hi, you've used the wrong template to make this request. You should use Template:Edit COI instead. SI09 (talk) 04:33, 28 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
