A major change to the article

[edit]

Initially made by Dierogeryoung, as a large bold edit, and reverted by me under WP:BRD, I am setting out my reasons for reversion, and inviting Dierogeryoung and other parties to discuss the major change and reach consensus.

My reason for reversion is simple, and is not based on any opinion about either the wholesale replacement of much of the information in the article nor upon the original content. It is that custom and practice suggest most strongly that consensus be built for enormous changes.

That is the only horse I have in this race.

May I suggest to Dierogeryoung that they work to build consensus for their desired changes, inviting in a wholly unbiased and even handed manner, any editors with an interest in this article to visit and offer their guidance and to assist with consensus building. I counsel them to avoid WP:CANVASS while doing so. I suggest a form of words such as "I believe that Guto Bussab requires serious changes to be made. I am proposing this changes at (location of proposed changed) and would value your unbiased opinion on what changes should be adopted in order that a consensus may be formed" 🇵🇸‍🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦‍🇵🇸 23:16, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Timtrent
Thank you for the guidance and the reminder about the BRD process. I appreciate your focus on building proper consensus. As you suggested, I have moved the discussion and proposed changes over to the draft's talk page (Draft talk:Guto Bussab) so that any interested editors can review and provide input there transparently. Dierogeryoung (talk) 04:53, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Apologies, thought this was on my talk page.
I'm more than happy to discuss the content here openly so we can ensure everything aligns with Wikipedia's standards before any major updates move forward.
To outline the reasoning behind the proposed changes, the goal is to introduce a neutral, well-structured biographical draft for Guto Bussab that relies entirely on independent secondary sources rather than self-published material. The draft currently incorporates coverage from:
The World Design Organization (regarding his curatorship and production work)
ArtThrob (documenting his solo exhibition Still at AGOG Gallery)
Mail & Guardian (covering his multidisciplinary background and film production credits)
City Press / News24 (covering the web series Gaze)
The draft is viewable at Draft:Guto Bussab for review.
I welcome any feedback or suggestions from editors here on how to refine this material so we can ensure it fully meets Wikipedia's standards. Dierogeryoung (talk) 04:57, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I believe, @Dierogeryoung, that this page, here, the article talk page, is where consensus needs to be built, for this is where the changes are intended to be implemented. 🇵🇸‍🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦‍🇵🇸 07:34, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Timtrent To clarify the consensus-building process for this page: Is there anything specific missing or required at this point, or does the current material on the talk page cover what is needed? Grateful for your guidance. Dierogeryoung (talk) 07:43, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Dierogeryoung You need to describe, here, the changes which you wish to build consensus for, coupled with the rationale for the changes. What will be blindingly obvious to one person will need to be explained to another, so give the best case for your desired changes that you are able to, and then attract people to the discussion. 🇵🇸‍🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦‍🇵🇸 13:15, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
COI
I have previously worked with Guto Bussab on certain projects. I am not currently employed by him.
Some of my previous projects (Keys, Money, Phone, Boat Girls and Love Runs Out) were produced in conjunction with Bussab's Muti Films.
I am proposing changes here, with third party references, rather than editing the article directly. Dierogeryoung (talk) 07:45, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Okay, that stated, here are my concerns about the current entry and my case for amendments.
As it stands, most of the career content rests on one source: Muti Films' own "About" page. The education detail, the awards list, the client list, the Gaze credit, the World Design Capital curatorship and the 1998 founding date all trace back to it. The lead is also cited to a bare "Guto Bussab" reference that isn't independent, and the article opens with a legal name, "Augusto Bussab", that I can't find a reliable source for at all.
So that's a sourcing and citation problem rather than a style one. As far as I understand, a subject's own company page cannot support awards claims or a client list in a BLP, and it can't establish that those details belong in the article in the first place. Correct me if I am misreading this.
So my approach is to do three things.
  1. Remove the unsourced birth name, the awards sentence and the client list.
  2. Re-cite the facts that survive to independent sources — the World Design Organization for the curatorship and the founding of MUTI, City Press for Gaze, FILMDIENST for Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema, ArtThrob for the exhibition work.
  3. Add material that is independently sourced but currently missing, including the Muti Gallery, two public-art projects, and an artist file held by the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art.
The article ends up longer, but that's because the sourced material grew, not the praise. On balance it contains fewer promotional claims than it does now.
There is also other work Bussab has been involved with, such as stills photographer on The Road Home, that I can't currently find third-party sourcing for, so I'm leaving it out of the amendments rather than citing it weakly.
I should also say the reversion was fair. I attempted it as a single wholesale replacement, which I now understand was the wrong way to go about it, so I'll put the changes here in numbered parts instead. Dierogeryoung (talk) 07:59, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
What follows here is a list of all the proposed changes, grouped and with sources.
Happy to work through individually or whatever process works.
A. Removals
  1. born Augusto Bussab in the lead — I can't find any reliable source for this name. Unsourced birth name on a BLP.
  2. The education sentence (honours degree, ESPM, 1993) — sourced only to Muti Films' "About" page.
  3. The awards sentence (Cannes, New York Festivals, London International Awards, Loeries) — sourced only to the same page. Self-published awards claims.
  4. The client list (MTN, British Airways, Western Union, Sasfin) — same source, and promotional in effect.
B. Same facts, independent sources
  1. Lead citation — replace the bare "Guto Bussab" reference with the World Design Organization press release and ArtThrob.
  2. Founding of MUTI — WDO describes Bussab as founder of MUTI, parent of Muti Films, Muti Photography and TheMutiGallery.
  3. World Design Capital 2014 curatorship — WDO press release, "World Design Capital 2014 Secures Top Curators". Independent and institutional.
  4. Gaze — City Press review (26 February 2017). This also corrects the credit: co-directed with Jared Ethan Blake, written by Blake, produced by Shanna Freedman.
  5. Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema — add Filmdienst, which independently records Muti Films as production company and Bussab among the producers. Drop the IMDb citation.
  6. Prime — add FilmAffinity for the cinematography credit; drop IMDb.
  7. The M.anifest "No Fear" video is currently cited only to YouTube. I'd suggest removing it unless someone finds independent coverage.
C. Additions, independently sourced
  1. Muti Gallery — ART AFRICA (2005) on the Johannesburg gallery; Getaway (2014) on the Oranjezicht gallery as curated by Bussab.
  2. Scrabbling — listed in the Infecting the City 2013 public arts festival programme.
  3. The Secret Love Project — VISI, as an official World Design Capital 2014 project.
  4. Smithsonian Institution holds a Guto Bussab artist file at the Warren M. Robbins Library, National Museum of African Art.
  5. Expand the Still entry using ArtThrob — exhibition ran 6 October to 11 November 2016, consisting of photographic narratives and video.
D. Structure
  1. Split Career into subsections (film and MUTI; visual art; public art and design projects), and add "Selected filmography" and "Selected exhibitions and projects" tables.

I can supply these as formatted citation templates if that's more useful.
One note: I previously stated that I could not find a third party for Prime, but have done so and included. Dierogeryoung (talk) 08:08, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
