Separate category for “ordinary crimes only”?

[edit]

I suggest having a separate category for countries that have life imprisonment only for exceptional crimes, such as wartime military offenses, such as Brazil. This is similar to the ”Abolitionist For Ordinary Crimes Only” category used for capital punishment. JoeSmoe2828 (talk) 10:26, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Data on Argentina is wrong

[edit]

In Argentina there is no life sentences. There is an option that is called such but after 40 year a person is anyway eligible for parole and the parole is almost impossible to deny. Worst case no person can be in prison mora than 50 years. 2800:40:31:7:A5AD:14F8:267D:A6D1 (talk) 23:05, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong, Robledo Puch has been in prison for 51 years and continues to be there, with parole denied time after time. 190.246.97.81 (talk) 11:54, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Back and forth on juvenile and adult cases

[edit]

Just a thought from a new user, but throughout the article each country talks rather about juvenile or adult. Some countries only talk about juvenile imprisonment and don’t necessarily say anything about adult sentences. I just wanted to mention that I think it would be less confusing if rather each country talked about both imprisonments or if we separated the two instead of mashing them together and having missing pieces. I think mentioning the juvenile cases is completely fine, but I also don’t understand why those are the only cases being talked about in some of the countries. El Salvador.

[edit]

I wish to refer to this statement fairly near the top of the article:

Life imprisonment is not used in all countries; Portugal was the first country to abolish life imprisonment, in 1894, and is the only country in the world that considers that this type of punishment – both for minors and majors, with or without the possibility of parole – is a violation of human rights, all other Portuguese-speaking countries also have maximum imprisonment lengths, as well as all Spanish-speaking countries in the Americas except for Cuba, Peru, Argentina, Chile and the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

El Salvador, as part of its crackdown on endemic gang violence, is imprisoning presumed gang members, apparently without trial, in CECOT (Centro del Confinamiento del Terrorismo, or the Terrorism Confinement Center), one of the harshest prisons in the world, and they are presumably in there for life. At least, the Salvadoran government has stated that they do not intend ever to release any of those held there.

Because of this, in the sentence I quoted above, I am wondering whether El Salvador should be added to the list of Spanish-speaking nations which do not have maximum lengths of imprisonment. It is clear that El Salvador intends to hold prisoners in CECOT indefinitely, presumably meaning until they die. That would seem to count at least de facto as life imprisonment, even if a court hasn't passed that sentence (because the prisoners do not appear to have had a trial at all, as far as I can make out).

Should I be bold and make this change (as some Wikipedia instruction pages urge you to do), or just mention it here and get some sort of consensus first? I am not all that bold, so I have opted for the latter course.M.J.E. (talk) 16:37, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The United States section is a mess

[edit]

It clearly violates WP:NOT (see WP:COATRACK), especially WP:NOTNEWS. It is a laundry list of case holdings rather than a summary of how life sentences work in the United States. Unfortunately, I don't have the time, energy, or interest to clean up that mess right now. Coolcaesar (talk) 16:40, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
