Mangrove savanna?

[edit]

What is a mangrove savanna? · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:07, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The source states that "M. tropicus was collected in Cambretaceous savanna on shore of Lake Victoria". It is unclear if there is a relationship with Cambretaceous and Combretaceous, a family of mangrove trees. simongraham (talk) 00:29, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Prey

[edit]

What do they eat? · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 07:29, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is a good question. The sources seem to speak more about their prey preferences rather than give a description of the full range of prey that they eat. simongraham (talk) 00:29, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'll review this. Before I get started, I noticed there a few clarification needed tags inline that may need to be taken care of soon. Cheers, Sophisticatedevening🍷(talk) 17:54, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed. I have attempted to resolve them and have also clarified some of the editor's other contributions. simongraham (talk) 00:29, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Prose

[edit]
  • The spider lives in large nest complexes in Kenya and Uganda near Lake Victoria that can stretch between trees in mangrove savannas. - What can stretch? The lake, or the distribution of the spiders?
    • That is definitely confusing. Rephrased.
  • It is a small flattened spider - Would simply "flat" suffice instead?
    • The source says "flattened", but I am happy to change it.
  • The word "apophysis" is used several times, but I don't see it elaborated on what it is for WP:TECHNICAL.
    • The first instance in the body, at the mention of the tegular apophysis, explains that is an appendage, so I have added that to the second instance too to make it clear.
  • Same for "Palpal bulb", needs elaboration.
    • Reworded.
  • pattern on the top that includes a brown streak and silver spots. - I would replace "that includes" with simply "with".
    • Replaced.
  • Looking into the description section, there is quite a few terms that need elaboration on like "cymbium", "tibia", "spinnerets" and more. I would add something short inline like how the lead does with It is a small flattened spider, with a cephalothorax (forward section).
    • I agree that the field can be very jargon-laden. I have added some gloss to the terms but I feel that too much explanation risks violating 3b. Please tell me if there needs more.
  • found throughout Africa and Asia, and have been identified - Remove the comma.
    • Removed.
  • The first examples to be found in Uganda - I would replace "to be" with "that were" or just remove altogether.
    • Removed.
  • Its chelicerae are brown like the male but the female labium and maxillae have pale yellow chewing margins that do not exist on the other sex. - This is a very confusing sentence, or at least it took me a little bit to understand, maybe reword?

Spot checks

[edit]

Based off of Special:permalink/1298950916:

  • 1: Where does it say that it is a jumping spider or in Salticidae?
    • Near the top it says "Family: Salticidae / Genus: Menemerus".
  • 4: Source say 67, text says "more than 60", maybe bump it up to say 65 or just 67. checkY
    • Interestingly, since that publication she has described even more.
  • 6: Orginal link was paywalled so I had to find it on TWL (I think this is it), it lists some characteristics but doesn't explicitly say it shares them with Hypaeus or Pellenes, is this implied?
    • It states that they share a "narrower oval form" of "fixed-embolus palms".
  • 12: Checks out. checkY
  • 16: All good. checkY
  • 17: Checks out checkY
  • 20: checkY
  • 23: checkY
  • 26: checkY

Other

[edit]
  • This is very optional but something I noticed, in the bibliography almost none of the journals are wikilinked, might be helpful to do so.
    • I read them in paper form or via a University account so I do not have many to hand. I will add what I can.

Looks great so far, only thing I noticed was you added WP:WTW (although), I'll be back tomorrow to hopefully finish the review :) Sophisticatedevening🍷(talk) 00:42, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
