"Legacy" heading

[edit]

How do folks feel about the recent change that makes Mordor have a "Legacy" in the works of Jackson, Led Zeppelin, and in other places? Chiswick Chap (talk) 06:03, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"File:Flag of Mordor"

[edit]

Isn't the File:Flag of Mordor.svg a pure fan creation that's not encyclopaedic? I only saw https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Eye_of_Sauron when I checked whether there is actually a canonical flag, but it's graphically too distant from this SVG, IMHO. I suggest a removal. The red lidless eye is certainly canonical, so the representation is perfectly reasonable. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:14, 28 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly disagree! Why it's indeed "a lidless red eye, like the insignia of Sauron", it's by no means "the flag of Mordor". Just as a random hand-drawing of a sun on a white stripe on a blue background is by no means the flag of Argentina. Or A quick internet search reveals very many red circly things on black ground "flags", and none is canonical, and they all differ from this one significantly enough to say they're not the same flag.
So, this is, best interpretation of the situation, a correct flag but insufficiently sourced, more likely a misunderstood source giving an incorrect flag, and in the latter case worse than not having the flag on the article.
There is a reasonable exegetic discussion to be had about whether having a flag under which the "nation" of Mordor stands proud would be antithetical to Tolkien's inspiration for Mordor, which (secondary source, Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull (eds), The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion, "Mount Doom", p. 613) are World War I's no man's land and death trenches, which inherently are not places to fly a flag (unless it's stained by the remains of their former owners). Not wanting to go there, but I do think it's worth noting that the desire to attach a flag to a country might simply not be a wise instinct in all cases, as it can be misleading.
Thus, I'm going to be bold (WP:bold) here, and remove that flag.
Please add back an image of a flag if you can actually
  • find a primary source, i.e., Tolkien describing the flag in sufficient detail to not require a lot of artistic freedom. I've searched LotR for "flag" and "banner", and neither yielded anything related to Mordor (or Sauron, who, in this context, should probably not be confused with the piece of land Mordor).
  • find a depiction from a work that Tolkien was aware of and we can assume Tolkien agreed to
  • find a depiction from a work that is culturally important (e.g., the movie trilogy)
and add a "as depicted by (name of sufficiently authorative source)" to the caption. The way it's currently presented is misleading. MüllerMarcus (talk) 14:01, 14 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
