Vishnumurthy
[edit]I am bit confused by the article take on this spirit. According to the article, this spirit originated in Tulu regions then migrated to Malayala regions. However, I have read that(unfortunately, I have lost the link and no matter of googling I was able to get back it) and this according to Tulu views, the spirit in fact a import to Tulu region from Malayala region. I wonder if somebody could cross check it.

- Found the article. From the article;
- Vishnumurty is a popular spirit in the southern part of the district in the areas adjoining the state of Kerala. The Vishnumurthy cult is imported from the Malayalam speaking area of the neighbouring states.

Split
[edit]It is better to split the articles in to different theyyams so that we can give more information about theyyams in their pages.--Anoopan (talk) 07:45, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Arbitrary heading
[edit]I disagree on the history by linking it to Parasurama. A few years ago, an article written by a historian in a news paper stated about 300 years ago Kolathiri raja desired to have an attakkali in Kolathu Nadu to match the Krishnanaattam and Ramanaattam in other princely states. He entrusted the task to a Kavi (Poet) of Tellecherry. He gathered information about prevailing thira done in an unsystematic manner by tribals in rural villages, created the theyyam and thottam paatu as seen today and staged about 30 theyyams before the Maharaja. Then the Maharaja ordered that these theyyams be staged in temples. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.206.1.252 (talk) 16:32, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
"Marathakkad sri iver..." repetition
[edit]In some of the sub-sections in section "Muthappan Anthithir" there is the following phrase repeated: "Marathakkad sri iver paradevatha kshethram, kuppam, taliparamba on makaram 25 to makaram 28." This makes no sense to me, and repeated the way it is it does not appear to be a valid edit. But I'm way out of my knowledge zone here, so maybe there's something I'm missing here? This article is not anybody's personal page
[edit]I have added some photos of Theyyam to this article. But all were fully reverted without mention any reason in this talk page. This is discouraging photographers like me to upload photos in the Wikimedia. Shagil Kannur (talk) 10:25, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
- You can add photos at Wikimedia Commons. This article already has far too many photographs but it also has a link to Commons, so anything relevant added and categorised correctly there can be viewed by people who visit this article. - Sitush (talk) 13:17, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

The lead too long.
[edit]The lead is extra long . Bilgiljilll (talk) 03:27, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- The lead was extra long and not understandable for a reader. I have made the important points stay in the lead and moved extra specifications like communities , specified region into the subsection, for a better understanding. Bilgiljilll (talk) 03:39, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Theyyam and Tira are different
[edit]'Theyyam is also known as Kaḷiyāṭṭaṁ or Tiṟa '
According to geographical locations and rituals theyyam and thira different. Theyyam is mostly a northern malabar thing while tira is of south malabar. In palakkad similar thing is called 'poothanum thirayum' which is nor theyyam nor tira Afv12e (talk) 07:04, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Why Is The Whole Introduction Typed Like This
[edit]The all-capital words are not at all consistent with Wikipedia's style and is a little disorienting.

Secularism?
[edit]I edited this and then thought better of it, it's possible as an American I don't understand the use of the term 'secular' in the introduction. Both citations for this discuss theyyam as explicitly religious, bringing people closer to real gods. One of the citations is a criticism of people who would call it secular! However, later the article discusses the way theyyam can be incorporated into multiple different religions, e.g. its pre-Hindu form, Hinduism, even Islam. I think if "secular" is intended to mean "religious, but not restricted to one specific religion," it should be made more clear in the introduction. LookOnMyEditsYeMighty (talk) 14:30, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- More attention to this thread. Theyyam is not a secular ritual by any length of the imagination. It is a Hindu ritual with origins in pre-Vedic society. It has been appropriated by a small section of muslims too. However there is no denying that it is a Hindu ritual. No religion except Hinduism claims it. Brahmanism?
[edit]Is any of the stuff in the intro about people who have "submitted" to Brahmanical religion being "prohibited" from Theyyam real, found in any legitimate source? The linked citations are false and contain no relevant information. I am all for this page being semi-protected as a lot of people are editing this, the majority having more hot blood than understanding on this topic. Indielov (talk) 05:13, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
