When to use

This tag is intended to identify articles that need extensive examination because they appear to have been generated using an AI system.

Such systems produce generic pages that have many issues, including passages that are copyright violations or are closely paraphrased from copyrighted sources (or from Wikipedia itself), and contain references that are, at face value, plausible, but in reality are entirely fictitious. Additionally, the prose itself may be stilted, promotional, or occasionally ludicrous.

Alternatives

Pages that are proven to be in violation of copyright should be nominated for deletion using {{Db-copyvio}}. Pages that are patent nonsense should be nominated for deletion using {{Db-nonsense}}. Pages that are entirely LLM-generated with no plausible human review should either be fixed or nominated for deletion using {{Db-llm}}.

Pages that are incomprehensible or have other major issues should be sent to the appropriate deletion discussion page.

If problems are correctable with the skills you already possess, consider being bold and fixing it yourself, rather than applying this template and leaving it for someone else to clean up.

If you feel that an article needs a significant amount of cleanup, you can post it to WikiProject Cleanup. Editors will give your submitted article a cleanup and fix any problems associated with it.

How to use

Place {{AI-generated|date=December 2025}} at the top of the disputed article, then explain your reasons on the page's talk page. If the date is not included it will likely be added later by a bot.

Optional parameters include:

|1= (or an empty parameter): changes the default descriptor (i.e., "article"). For example, {{AI-generated|section}} changes it to "section".
|talk=: links to a specific section on the talk page for discussion.
|section=: any value changes the default descriptor (i.e., "article") to "section".
|reason=: explanation of why you tagged this article (e.g., "See Wikipedia:WikiProject AI Cleanup/Noticeboard/2026-01-01 User:Example" or "99% rating at example-detector.com")
|certain=: changes the wording to "incorporates text", as opposed to "may incorporate text".

When to remove

As is the case for most maintenance tags, this should only be removed once the problems are undetectable or demonstrably non-existent.

To that end, when this tag is applied to an article in good faith, it should ideally only be removed once every word and fact potentially affected has been reviewed. LLMs are capable of expert-like speech, fraudulent or mischaracterized sources and misleading material, and that may extend beyond even what the original editor noticed when adding this tag. When the problem is especially pervasive in an article, consider this tag a specialization of Template:Cleanup rewrite, although remember that the speedy deletion criterion Wikipedia:G15 may apply.

When applied to a section, only the words and facts of the section need to be reviewed for resolution. As well, if all affected material is easily detectable and removed without thorough review of the entire article, that too may merit the removal of this tag.
