Red links
[edit]Red links mean an article does not exist. Please do not mislead people by using this confusing template to make links red when they should not be. I've removed it from Template:Cleanup. Angela. 03:02, Aug 8, 2004 (UTC)
Edit request

Please remove the usage section and replace it with the template as I've created a documentation subpage at Template:Red/doc. A specific description of the request follows below. Thanks.

Hate to do this to another administrator, but there is an empty line at the very top that needs to be removed. It is causing a new line to be placed on pages where it is used.
In other words, we don't want
this to happen when the template is used.
Change this:
<span style="color:red">{{{1}}}</span><noinclude>
{{pp-template|small=yes}}
<!-- Add categories and interwikis to the /doc subpage, not here! -->
{{Documentation}}</noinclude>
To this:

{{pp-template|small=yes}}
<!-- Add categories and interwikis to the /doc subpage, not here! -->

- This change doesn't need consensus. Besides, signatures should not have templates in them for various reasons. --Lightsup55 ( T | C ) 22:20, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Change color

From red to #d20, per WP:COLOR.
More specifically, edit the first line so that
<noinclude>{{Ombox|type=content|text=This template should '''NOT''' be used for generic error messages and warnings, since it is incompatible with dark mode. Please use {{tl|error-small}} for errors, and {{tl|destructive}} for everything else.}}</noinclude><span style="color: red;">{{{1}}}</span><noinclude>

- I'm not seeing the relevant guidance at WP:COLOR. I'm probably missing something. What is the benefit of moving from #FF0000, which is the same as "red" and matches the name of the template, to #DD2200, which is a darker, greener red that is not the same as the name of the template? Do you have plans to modify the other color templates in the See also section? – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:29, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
The contrast ratio should meet at least the WCAG 2.0 AA standard of 4.5:1
;#f00's contrast ratio against an#fffbackground is 4.0:1. Sapphaline (talk) 20:31, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Sapphaline (talk) 20:34, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Do you have plans to modify the other color templates in the See also section
- no, becausegreenandblueare compliant with WCAG AA when used against#fff.- Apparently it's not only red, green and blue, so I guess some of them (like Template:Aqua or Template:Lime) just shouldn't be used in articles. Sapphaline (talk) 22:29, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
- I see no issues with making some of them (like Template:Gray) WCAG AA-compliant, though. Sapphaline (talk) 22:33, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
Not done. If there is an accessibility limitation, please modify the documentation to explain the limitation. A template called "red" should render the color "red". – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:17, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

How incompatible with dark mode?
[edit]@Matrix What is meant by This template should NOT be used for generic error messages and warnings, since it is incompatible with dark mode
? I am using dark mode and the red appears properly. {{red}} is not {{color}}, only {{color}} has TemplateStyles and class="tmp-color" to disable {{color}} in dark mode. {{red}} does not. 173.206.134.138 (talk) 21:39, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
- Whilst it does appear in dark mode, it has too low of a contrast. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 16:34, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- A contention above is that it also has too low of a contrast in the light mode, so any change to the documentation should probably cover that possible issue as well. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:50, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- Isn't it the other way around? Firefox tells me it has 4.00 (bad) in light mode and 4.63 (good) in dark mode. 173.206.134.138 (talk) 20:26, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- Whilst it does pass, it's not pleasant. var(--color-error) is a lot more pleasant on the eyes, and Jonesey95 has also pointed out issues with ight mode. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 17:57, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
