Biography

I am Nina Baker, a former merchant navy deck officer, environmental campaigner and engineer and now an independent engineering historian specialising mainly in the histories of women who worked in engineering.

Research

My principal areas of publishedresearch interest are:

  • Women in engineering, mainly UK
  • Women in construction trades and professions
  • Women in STEM current and past
  • Construction history

Education

I have a First Mate's Certificate of Competency (foreigngoing), BSc hons 2.1 in Engineering Design with Appropriate Technology and PhD in the durability of high alumina cement[1]

Memberships

I am a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland (FIESIS), Honorary Member of the Women's Engineering Society (HMWES), member of the Construction History Society and a supporter of the Glasgow Women's Library where my collection of books and archives on women in STEM is now housed. I am a former Deacon (2022-23) of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow.
