Nomenclator Zoologicus 1939–1996 http://insecta.bio.spbu.ru/z/nomenclator_zoologicus_PDF.htm

General comments on nomenclature: Dubois, 2011. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature must be drastically improved before it is too late. 10.11646/bionomina.2.1.1 Nieukerken et al., 2019. REF

  • Code aspects:
    • Art. 12.1.: To be available, every new name published before 1931 Must satisfy the provisions of Article 11 and must be accompanied by a description or a definition of the taxon that it denotes, or by an indication.
    • and: Art. 12.2.5.: In the case of a new genus-group name, the use of one or more available specific names in combination with it, or clearly included under it, or clearly referred to it by bibliographic reference, provided that the specific name or names can be unambiguously assigned to a nominal species-group taxon or taxa.

//

  • Recent Family-group names [under Art. 16. Names published after 1999]
    • Art. 16.2. Family-group names: type genus to be cited. In addition to satisfying the provisions of Articles 13-15, a new family-group name published after 1999 must be accompanied by citation of the name of the type genus (i.e. the name from which the family-group name is formed).
  • Modern Genus-group names [under Article 13. Names published after 1930. Also links back from Art. 16. Names published after 1999]
    • Art. 13.3. Genus-group names. To be available, every new genus-group name published after 1930 (except those proposed for collective groups or ichnotaxa) must, in addition to satisfying the provisions of Article 13.1, be accompanied by the fixation of a type species in the original publication [Art. 68] or be expressly proposed as a new replacement name (nomen novum) [Art. 67.8].
  • Recent Species-group names [under Art. 16. Names published after 1999]
    • Art. 16.4. Species-group names: fixation of name-bearing types to be explicit fixation of name-bearing types to be explicit. Every new specific and subspecific name published after 1999, except a new replacement name (a nomen novum), for which the name-bearing type of the nominal taxon it denotes is fixed automatically [Art. 72.7], must be accompanied in the original publication. / Else 16.4.1. by the explicit fixation of a holotype, or syntypes, for the nominal taxon [Arts. 72.2, 72.3, 73.1.1, 73.2 and Recs. 73A and 73C], and, / 16.4.2. where the holotype or syntypes are extant specimens, by a statement of intent that they will be (or are) deposited in a collection and a statement indicating the name and location of that collection (see Recommendation 16C).

Gender agreement in formation of recent genera. Per 30.1. Gender of names formed from Latin or Greek words. Gender based on Latin or Greek dictionaries, with no clarity if those dictionaries both contain the word with different genders, e.g. schema. Exception 30.1.4.1. Author can state "not formed from, or is not treated as, a Latin or Greek word" then interpreted as arbitrary, then gender either 30.2.2. as expressly stated by authors, 30.2.3. inferred from epithet suffixes, 30.2.4. masculine unless the genus suffix can be interpreted as feminine or neuter. What could go wrong? E.g. "Striatovertex" a wasp genus created in 2011 where authors state as feminine - in their Etymology (p62) "and is feminine." However, also "Striatovertex means striated vertex (from latin Stria and Vertex)," so expressly stating both components are from latin, and no statement it is not to be treated as latin (or greek).
