Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Ackee123, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I notice that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or any other editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One firm rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! Hello, I wanted to thank you for your welcome message and guidance when I first started editing here. Looking back, I can see how much I had to learn, and at times I struggled more than I realised then.
Since that time, I’ve learned a lot more, both about Wikipedia’s processes and about myself, and I now better understand some of the challenges I faced early on. I’m grateful for the patience and encouragement of editors like you, which helped me stay connected to the community.
Best regards Ackee123 (talk) 09:56, 26 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Iqua Colson 2015.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Iqua Colson 2015.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 15:11, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I had searched Google images and found no free equivalent to the images for Iqua. I will write her son as he took the original image and ask if he can complete the Wiki form. I will also ask if they might consider releasing an image for free use. Ackee123 (talk) 16:31, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission at Articles for creation: sandbox (October 30)

[edit]
Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by NewYorkActuary was:
This submission's references do not adequately show the subject's notability. Wikipedia requires significant coverage (not just mere mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject—see the guidelines on the notability of people, the golden rule and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue. Please improve the submission's referencing (see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners and Help:Introduction to referencing/1), so that the information is verifiable, and there is clear evidence of why the subject is notable and worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia. If additional reliable sources cannot be found for the subject, then it may not be suitable for Wikipedia at this time.
The comment the reviewer left was:
Right now, the existing sources do not establish anything other than that the author and the works exist. As for establishing encyclopedic notability, this can't be done by citing the website of her employer and a student-run newspaper. What's needed here is in-depth coverage in sources that are both authoritative and independent of the subject.

You'll note that I've re-structured the draft to meet our standard layout for biographies. Feel free to add more sections as needed and as appropriate. I also listed the books using the {{cite book}} template. In doing so, I added (but didn't fill in) parameters for the location of the publishers and the books' ISBN numbers. That information can be added to the templates by editing the Works section.

Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit when they have been resolved.

Your draft article, User:Ackee123/sandbox

[edit]

Hello, Ackee123. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "sandbox".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Home Lander (talk) 20:29, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed

[edit]

Hello, I am asking for assistance with removing template messages at the top of the page after reviewing updates re the page for Iqua Colson, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iqua_Colson I have made adjustments as pointed out in the previous reviews. I have added more citations that I have found through searches online following Wikipedia guidelines. Sorry it's take me so long to return to this, I have been away due to family health issues but am back. I do still need to upload a new image for Iqua. Hope to do that next week. Any suggestions re the text as have edited and added citations, would be grateful for. TY for your patience. Ackee123 (talk) 10:41, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Leave the template, since it documents an aspect of the article that readers may need to know. You should rather focus on building up the case for notability, as it applies to musicians, since it's not clear from the current references. The title of the Chicago Reader article expresses the question succinctly. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 19:29, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission at Articles for creation: Adegoke Steve Colson (December 2)

[edit]
Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! Unfortunately, it has not been accepted because it included copyrighted content, which is not permitted on Wikipedia.
Wikipedia cannot accept material copied from elsewhere, unless it explicitly and verifiably has been released to the world under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license or into the public domain and is written in an acceptable tonethis includes material that you own the copyright to. You should attribute the content of a draft to outside sources, using citations, but copying and pasting or closely paraphrasing sources is not acceptable. The entire draft should be written using your own words and structure. Note to reviewers: do not leave copyright violations sitting in the page history. Please follow the instructions here.
You are welcome to write an article on the subject, but please do not use copyrighted work. Missvain (talk) 22:47, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Draft:Adegoke Steve Colson, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images from either web sites or printed works. This article appears to contain work copied from http://www.aacm-newyork.org/stevecolson.html, and therefore to constitute a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policies. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with our copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators are liable to be blocked from editing.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under license allowed by Wikipedia, then you should do one of the following:

It may also be necessary for the text to be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

See Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries for a template of the permissions letter the copyright holder is expected to send.

If you would like to begin working on a new version of the article you may do so at this temporary page. Leave a note at Draft talk:Adegoke Steve Colson saying you have done so and an administrator will move the new article into place once the issue is resolved.

Thank you, and please feel welcome to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Happy editing! Missvain (talk) 22:48, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the feedback

[edit]

I didn't copy but I understand that is too close. I will see if I can re-write so is more encyclopedic. I will also write to the AACM. Thank you for your patience. I will do my best to get this right. Ackee123 (talk) 22:59, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have now written to the AACM New York Chapter explaining your concerns and waiting for them to reply. As they are a volunteer organization with limited resources I am unsure I will hear back from them or when so have also cc'd Adegoke Steve Colson as he is a member. So thinking I should try to write another version that you may consider.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Adegoke Steve Colson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.aacm-newyork.org/stevecolson.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Jalen Folf (talk) 06:45, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am still waiting for a reply from the organization. As well I am recovering from family health issues which are ongoing and I am primary care provider so has affected my being able to respond to you. I have also spoken to the artist who I am trying to set up the page for. Do you think it better that I delete this and create a new page? Ackee123 (talk) 13:42, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

AACM NY chapter have given permission to use information documented on their site regarding Adegoke Steve Colson. I am asking them to email the letter to Wikipedia directly. Please do not delete the draft page.Ackee123 (talk) 15:25, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Red 8th Anniversary

[edit]
Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap!

Your submission at Articles for creation: Adegoke Steve Colson (August 1)

[edit]
Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by Jamiebuba was:
This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.

Your draft article, Draft:Adegoke Steve Colson

[edit]

Hello, Ackee123. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, "Adegoke Steve Colson".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material, the draft has been deleted. When you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Liz Read! Talk! 16:37, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Liz, Thanks for taking the time to respond last year. I messaged again to request undeletion, because unexpected burnout due to chronic personal and family health issues resulted in my being unable to finish. I have had a long period of recovery and have more support now. So, I have requested undeletion again and I got a reply from someone a few days ago, but who said they would need some kind of assurance I would complete the new stub. I am happy to start over, but thought I should request rather than start again. But I can't find the recent response I received. Please could you have a look, if you have time or advise me the best way forward? Ackee123 (talk) 19:38, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Liz,
After much stopping and starting, I have drafted a new English language description for a page about Ade Steve Colson. I drafted it in a Word doc so I could easily keep track of third party sources. PDFs are pieces that were in printed magazines or printed sources which are not available online. I will add the references according to name, date of each of those. Much information about his significance from 3rd party sources was scattered and associated with the work of others due to the way he has been integral to the development of music through his work as a musician and an educator. I have gathered many links to support the piece I have put together here for you to consider before setting up another Wiki page for him. I have tried to ensure the language is encyclopaedic in describing his work and history. Thank you for your patience and understanding. I look forward to feedback and suggestions to be able to create a proper Wikipedia page about this artist and educator: Adegoke Steve Colson Please note that there are Wiki pages already that mention him and I will add those plus have included the list of third party external sources below and will add the links if am given the go ahead to set up draft Wikipedia page:
Adegoke Steve Colson (born September 4, 1949) is an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and educator. A long-standing member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1972, Colson is known for his contributions to avant-garde and spiritual jazz, his interdisciplinary work in theatre and multimedia, and his influence on multiple generations of musicians.
Early Life and Education
Colson was born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in East Orange, graduating from East Orange High School. He became a piano major at Northwestern University School of Music in 1967. He also studied alto saxophone with Fred Hemke, earning a Bachelor of Music Education (BME) degree in 1971. During his first year, he participated in the 1968 Bursar’s Office Takeover, a peaceful protest by Black students advocating for racial equity at Northwestern, reflecting values of social justice that would inform his artistic work. [19]
According to a 2025 profile in The New York City Jazz Record, Colson first met drummer Steve McCall while attending Northwestern University. McCall, a founding member of the AACM, encouraged Colson to join the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), which Colson formally did in late 1972, shortly after graduating. [20]
Career
Colson's debut recording, Triumph!, was released in 1979 with his ensemble Unity Troupe. His second album, No Reservation, was released in 1980 on the Italian label Black Saint. [3]
He has performed and recorded with Kahil El'Zabar, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Muhal Richard Abrams, Ed Blackwell, Hamiet Bluiett, Joseph Jarman, Malachi Favors, Oliver Lake, and other AACM musicians. With his wife, Iqua Colson, he recorded Hope for Love (2004) and The Untarnished Dream (2009), the latter receiving praise from JazzTimes. [4][5][11]
Colson’s solo double album Tones For (2015), released on Silver Sphinx, was celebrated for its spiritual depth, with Hothouse Magazine and All About Jazz noting its explorations of African American heritage and liberation themes. [12][13]
In 2021, Colson premiered Incandescence, a six-part suite commissioned by the AACM and the American Composers Forum. [9]
His ensemble, The Colson Unity Troupe, was reviewed in The New York Times in 1983 for their performance at Soundscape. [16]
Colson’s music frequently reflects his commitment to social justice, informed by his participation in the 1968 Bursar’s Office Takeover at Northwestern University and his collaborations with poet and activist Amiri Baraka. Works such as Greens, Rice, and a Rope and “…as in a Cultural Reminiscence…” exemplify his dedication to exploring themes of Black identity, resistance, and liberation through large-scale, multimedia compositions. [19][20]
A 2025 feature in The New York City Jazz Record describes Colson as “an authentic purveyor of detail and form” with “enormous harmonic sophistication,” blending traditions from stride piano to avant-garde jazz. The article also credits Colson’s Triumph! and No Reservation recordings as setting the template for his exploratory yet accessible approach, highlighting collaborations with Kahil El’Zabar, Andrew Cyrille, Baikida Carroll, and Amiri Baraka over a decades-spanning career. [20]
Multimedia and Theatre Work
Colson has composed for theatrical works, including Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God by Djanet Sears and The Life and Life of Bumpy Johnson by Amiri Baraka and Max Roach. His 1989 multimedia work Greens, Rice, and a Rope premiered at Newark Symphony Hall, leading to the declaration of “Adegoke Steve Colson Day” by the City of Newark. [1]
Recognition and Teaching
Colson has worked with the NEA’s Jazz Artists in the Schools program and has taught at Bloomfield College and Montclair State University. [1]
He was inducted into the East Orange Hall of Fame in 2018 and formally named a Steinway Artist in 2021. [6][7]
Recent and Upcoming Work
In 2022, Colson received a Fromm Foundation commission to compose a new work. [8]
His piece Mirrors premiered at Merkin Hall in November 2023, co-presented by the Kaufman Music Center and the International Contemporary Ensemble. [14][15]
The work was highlighted in a 2022 New York Times feature on national premieres. [17]
His upcoming album Glow, featuring Iqua Colson, Andrew Cyrille, and Mark Helias, is set for release in May 2025. [1]
In 1985, The New York Times featured Colson in a “Critics’ Choices: Jazz” list, highlighting his growing influence in the genre. [18]
Legacy and Archives
The Iqua Colson and Adegoke Steve Colson Collection is archived at Northwestern University’s Music Library, preserving scores, recordings, and personal papers. [19]

This submission does not appear to be written in the formal tone expected of an encyclopedia article. Entries should be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources. Please rewrite your submission in a more encyclopedic format. Please make sure to avoid peacock terms that promote the subject.
Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit after they have been resolved.

Hi, I appreciate very much the feedback. But I thought that the New York Times review was not merely a mention. The review is a significant piece about his recent work. The JazzTimes is also a notable publication. Also he is mentioned in many Wikipedia pages of other significant artists. I havent linked them. Should I do that also? Hi Ackee123, I think one of the issues that caused this to be declined is you do not include sufficient biobliogrpahic details in your citations which makes it hard for anyone t verify the information. I did update a couple of NYT articles you cited so take a look at them. You do not need to use the same format I did but author (if applicable, not all may have authors), title of the article, exact date, name of publication (which you did include) should be included. I also found some more mores source which I included but there are certainly more. For the Discography if you could include the year of the release, that would be great. I don't know what SS01, etc. means and I don't think I have seen codes like that used before so I am not sure it's helpful. See Reggie Workman for an example. Thank you so much for taking the time to clarify. I appreciate very much the feedback from you and your colleagues. I have learned a lot through this process. Thank you for your patience and insights. Ackee123 (talk) 20:57, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I updated some more citations and noticed he also goes by Steve so created a WP:redirect for Steve Colson so if anyone searches that name they will be directed to the article. I am actually surprised we did not already have an article about him so thanks for creating it, even if you have a COI. If you can get a photo of him and one of Iqua that would be great. The easiest is if you take the photos so you own the copyright. I also noticed throughout the years you have responded to editors on your talk page. Usually, they will only know if you WP:ping them. If you are using the Rely link, click on the person icon and select their username, it will add the ping for you. S0091 (talk) 15:20, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much. I have more sources. I should have waited to finish adding. I will keep going. Ackee123 (talk) 19:07, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
