Regarding the article, Amani Oruwariye

[edit]

Hey Clyde, though we're relatively unacquainted, I was hoping to ask for help regarding vandalism on the article Amani Oruwariye. I'm not so sure how this works, so I deeply apologize for any mistakes made during discussion.

Stephen Sowerby

[edit]

Hi Clyde. You queried an edit on the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Sowerby, which cited no source about the date of death. The only record currently in the public domain is this page, from a member of the family (which one would hope is to be counted as a reliable source in such circumstances): https://www.flickr.com/photos/202379679@N07/albums/72177720324326810/with/54378101738 Can the previous edit on the page be reverted to record the fact of the death? 147.147.42.84 (talk) 12:10, 25 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Using Flickr as a source may violate Wikipedia's policy on user-generated sources. I would recommend, if possible, finding a more reliable source, such as an obituary or news article. See Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. Clyde H. Mapping (talk) 19:38, 25 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that no obituaries or news articles were published at the time of his death. There is however a published reference to the death in a book written by his son, published this year by Cambridge University Press (Richard Sowerby, Natural and Supernatural in Early Medieval England, p. 72). Perhaps both could be cited as sources if used together (the book for a reputable publication that contains a reference to the death, and the Flickr gallery that supplies the day/month)? 148.252.146.237 (talk) 08:31, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A book is better than nothing but might constitute a self-published source by some definitions. I would consult the reliable sources noticeboard for a definitive answer in this case. Clyde H. Mapping (talk) 23:38, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Having taken a look at the guidance you've linked to, I'd suggest that the way forward would be for the date of birth to be removed. This page falls under the category of 'Biographies of people who are relatively unknown', for which the guidance is to 'include only material relevant to the person's notability'. In this case that would be the information about Olympic performance, not other personal details. Removing the date of birth altogether would then prevent Wikipedia from displaying an incorrect age as if for a still living person, which I know is the source of some distress for some of his relatives (and is the reason why I am seeking to make an edit here). I think that an edit of this kind meets the policies laid out for biographies of minor public figures with fewer sources of verifiability. 147.147.42.84 (talk) 13:55, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I made earlier for this edit to Masoud Pezeshkian. But I saw Hamasien (talk · contribs) keeps reinstating "Iran" to "Imperial State of Iran" for not following MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE. Absolutiva 07:36, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
