January 2024

Information icon Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. To help yourself remember, you may wish to check the "prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box in your preferences. Thanks! NM 01:27, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Turkey" vs. "Türkiye"

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for your work on the Istanbul Metro. These articles are great, and they are an excellent addition to Wikipedia.

However, I've got one small caveat; I saw you used the name "Türkiye" in these articles as the name of the country generally known in English as "Turkey". I've just edited those articles to fix the country name to use the English version, as specified by the WP:COMMONNAME policy, so there's no need for you to do anything to change them; just please use the English exonym "Turkey" from now on instead of the native endonym "Türkiye" when creating articles.

Here's a quick Q&A on the issue:

Q: Why don't you use the name Türkiye, the correct name for this country?
A: Because the English-language Wikipedia has a WP:COMMONNAME policy. We use names for countries and places that are the names commonly used for them in English, regardless of what official organizations use. Technically, this kind of name is known as an exonym. For example, we use the name Germany, instead of the native endonym Deutschland, and we use the name Japan instead of the native name 日本.
Q: But the Turkish government, U.S. State Department, and United Nations all use "Türkiye", so it must be correct.
A: Indeed they do. But WP:COMMONNAME is not authority-based, but usage-based.

Notice that this does not apply when we are quoting a literal name in Turkish; for example, the newspaper is called Türkiye, not Turkey. To do that would be hypercorrection, and we don't do that. Nor do we mangle the name into English in direct quotations, including titles of documents, nor in URLs. But it does apply for all uses in Wikipedia's own voice in the English language, including article titles (so the capital is Ankara, Turkey, not "Ankara, Türkiye")

If or when that general English-language usage changes (as has happened in the past with place names such as Mumbai and Beijing), the same WP:COMMONNAME policy implies that the English-language Wikipedia will necessarily also follow suit. So far, that hasn't happened.

This has been discussed many times, with the same result every time because of the common name policy. If you'd like to discuss this further, please take it up at Talk:Turkey. — The Anome (talk) 11:39, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject templates

[edit]

I notice that your Istanbul Metro articles have blank talk pages. If you create a talk page for them with the following templates on:

{{WikiProject Turkey}}
{{WikiProject Trains|Subway=yes|stations=yes}}

they will be automatically added to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Turkey and Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains watchlists, allowing other editors to review and improve those articles further.

You can see an example of this at Talk:Çırçır (Istanbul Metro).

Something to consider

[edit]

Hi! I've reviewed your recent creations of articles on Chinese subway stations. Wikipedia almost always permits these articles and you have done a good job ensuring they are adequately sourced. Considering your creation of so many articles and evident capacity to ensure they meet the minimum standards for an article, I would encourage you to apply for the autopatrol right. This would mean your articles are automatically considered "reviewed" and will appear in public searches earlier. It also alleviates the burden on new page patrollers. If you want to apply for this user right, please visit this page and add your name! Best, ~ Pbritti (talk) 15:16, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled granted

[edit]

Hi GMB205, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! DanCherek (talk) 02:38, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some suggestions about Guangzhou Metro

[edit]

Thanks for your contributions for the articles of Guangzhou Metro. I find that you are still using border, cellspacing, cellpadding, align and valign in the station layout diagram, but they are obsolete, they should be replaced by CSS style. You can refer to the edits I made at Chisha North station.

And, according to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains/Archive: 2020#Closure of 2019 station layout RFC, layout diagram and exit table aren't necessary in English Wiki. Considering that a complete removal may require further discussion, I have only removed the exit table (because, frankly, the station nearby section is somewhat trivial and its content is subject to frequent changes, so I prefer to retain only the exit signs). Benteds (talk) 04:00, 24 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, you are still using these diagrams in your contributions, and established some templates to "simplify" them. I think I have made myself quite clear: station layout diagrams should only be kept for stations with complex structures, while for simple stations (such as Dazhou station (Guangzhou Metro)) they are completely unnecessary. As for exit tables, they are not acceptable at any time; if they are still retained in stations of other cities, it is only because no one has removed them.
Thank you for your contributions, but wouldn't it be better to move beyond the "translation" framework and instead adopt the principles that have already gained consensus on the English wiki? Sorry, but I will be nominating the exit table template for deletion, and I hope you can limit the use of such charts. If the timing is right, I will also propose the deletion of the station layout templates. Benteds (talk) 03:37, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The original intention of making those exit tables was that User:-25FJ25 was putting them in new pages and I thought to do the edits for the existing ones to enhance cohesion. But since now you believe that adding them is too clunky and cluttering and not necessary for the en wiki side I won't create those anymore. But I have to admit, I find it quite intriguing that you personally single me out for using templates I did not create, whilst at the same time never acknowledging the same problem on the talk page of User:-25FJ25 even since July, when you first contacted me here. I'll admit that I've ignored your previous comment because I took it personally, but this time I'll do things differently. So from now on, instead of pinning the problem on me and commenting on here every time (mainly because every time I was the most recent account on the recent changes list, I think you look to that as your primary reason), I think you're better off acknowledging the problem on the talk page of every contributor that has done this. Because very soon, if you comment repeatedly on my future edits even after I promise to stop now, it is starting to feel like you're deliberately singling me out and stalking my edits, which falls under grounds of WP:WIKIHOUNDING, and that will force me to take action against your behavior. So, I thank you for correcting my stance to not create the tables instead, but I do not appreciate being singled out just because I was the last person you saw who made changes to an article, when you should be talking to every contributor that made changes to the related content, or may create similar things on new pages in the future.
If you further disagree with my conduct on future edits you can open an RfC on the ProjectTrains talk page and we can continue the conversation from there. GMB205 (talk) 16:09, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And the next time you correct my edits I would appreciate you spellcheck. It's fine if you're not sound in the spelling of some English words, just keep that in mind. GMB205 (talk) 16:35, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This might be the last time I address this issue. I assure you that initially, regarding the exit table and station layout templates, I did not realize this was User:-25FJ25's idea, and therefore did not provide an explanation on his user page. I apologize once again for any trouble this has caused you during this period. Benteds (talk) 04:50, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I realize I was being a little too harsh on you, I used some brash language when you changed my previous edits as I was emotionally challenged at that time, and I realize that it definitely was not necessary to go to those lengths. I am sorry for my words as well. GMB205 (talk) 09:26, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Then I suggest you also comment about this on the talk pages of other contributors concerned instead of purely policing my edits you don't like. GMB205 (talk) 17:11, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would really appreciate it if you could help. Additionally, I tested a new format for the station layout at Tianhe Zhucun station and Chebei station, which was inspired by zh:月台配置. The reason for not using the template is not only that it isn't good enough, but also its lack of flexibility. Benteds (talk) 04:54, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, if you think it works better then I'm on board. Just also let User:-25FJ25 know as well so they don't go off drafting new pages with the exact same unchanged bulky templates. GMB205 (talk) 05:03, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I also didn't understand why you changed the rint box to the rcb box when the former is the standard used for this system instead of rcb. Is it because of the WP reading requirements, or is there another reason why you changed it? GMB205 (talk) 16:23, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I just think it's odd that using rint will give "4 towards ..." instead of "Line 4 towards ..." if we treat it as a sentence. However, this can also be seen as a personal preference. Benteds (talk) 05:08, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Pazhou station

[edit]

Hello, I have noticed that you have split Pazhou station into Pazhou station (Guangzhou Metro) and Pazhou railway station to distinguish the metro station from the intercity station. The problem I have with that is that the Line 11 building is the same building as the Intercity building, and that the Line 8 building is in a separate building. Similarly to how Berlin Jungfernheide station is not split into Jungfernheide station (Berlin U-Bahn) and Berlin Jungfernheide railway station, I believe Pazhou station should stay as one page. Thank you.

The elimination history needs an update after today (yesterday). Theres a difference that needs to be added for elimination. Dunno how these tables work, but maybe you do. Psephguru (talk) 01:25, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, someone else has already made the relevant update edits. I'll tidy it up for now and after the 2nd semi-final as my internet was cut off at the end of last night. GMB205 (talk) 08:10, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And for table editing I just follow last year's format (Series 14) as that method seems to be the easiest and there's not much difference between the season formats. GMB205 (talk) 08:12, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
