Administrators' newsletter – January 2025
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2024).
- Following an RFC, Wikipedia:Notability (species) was adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
- Following the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: CaptainEek, Daniel, Elli, KrakatoaKatie, Liz, Primefac, ScottishFinnishRadish, Theleekycauldron, Worm That Turned.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2025 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

- The hidden version (from 2010) was smaller (10 KB). I have restored it though. Jay 💬 05:43, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

WTF
[edit]You've been an administrator since like forever (fooled me, I didn't even realize you were one) and you're this clueless? If your objective is to raise my blood pressure to the limit, you've succeeded brilliantly. wbm1058 (talk) 19:40, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- Clueless about what? I wondered the same about you, but I knew you are an admin since you deleted a page. Jay 💬 19:44, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- Your close at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2025 January 14#Common lime didn't, in practice find "no consensus". It found a consensus that not only is Tilia × europaea the primary topic, it's the only topic. What a farce. Maybe it's primary topic in the UK, but I think the tree's practically unknown in the United States – I'm not aware of them lining any roads here. To have a primary topic, you need to have a consensus that there is a primary topic. Per WP:Primary topic, "highly likely—much more likely than any other single topic" means highly likely editors will agree that it's much more likely than any other single topic. When editors can't come to an agreement, the default is to disambiguate.
- Well, I've just cooled off enough to read your last sentence, "No prejudice against converting this to a disambiguation page", so that's what I'm gonna do, i.e. override your close. – wbm1058 (talk) 13:25, 7 February 2025 (UTC)
- I made the "no consensus, retarget" per WP:NCRET:
.. it may be appropriate to retarget a redirect in these circumstances, even absent explicit consensus for the retarget.
There were nomultiple retargeting options
to go for the "no consensus, disambiguate". By the way, you are discussing this close objection under the title "WTF", and I'm assuming doing that was an oversight. Jay 💬 14:43, 7 February 2025 (UTC)- Well, I'd never noticed the subpage Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Common outcomes before, so thanks for the pointer, so now I know where you were coming from. I don't like to see essays that have not been thoroughly vetted by the community plastered with so many shortcuts that are used to imply they have been vetted as justifiable rationales for closing discussions. None of the three WP:NCRET examples fit this particular case. Just disregard my arbitrary section header if you like, it's not important. – wbm1058 (talk) 15:22, 7 February 2025 (UTC)

Request to rename WikiProject
[edit]Hi there, I'm hoping you might be able to help us over at WikiProject Eurovision. We recently had a discussion on renaming the project and consensus was reached to rename to "WikiProject Song Contests". Given the large number of sub-pages which have been created over time, I felt getting help from an admin would be beneficial, just so I don't royally screw it up! Looking through the pages I don't believe everything needs to be renamed, as a lot of stuff has been archived, so if you're willing to help, please let me know if you'd like a full list of pages to be renamed! Many thanks. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 10:39, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- If the archived pages needn't be renamed, then won't they continue to show in a user search and create confusion? For example, WP:WikiProject Eurovision/Archive/todo. If a user types in "WP:WikiProject Eurovision" in the search bar, it will list this and all archived pages. Or is it sufficient that the base WP:WikiProject Eurovision page is deleted (and not made a redirect) as part of the pagemove, while any other non-archived pages continue to exist as redirects to the new page name? Upto 100 subpages can be moved as part of a page move. Jay 💬 16:35, 4 February 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of a group of Wikipedians to better understand their experiences! We are also looking to interview some survey respondents in more detail, and you will be eligible to receive a thank-you gift for the completion of an interview. The outcomes of this research will shape future work designed to improve on-wiki experiences.
We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this survey, which shouldn’t take more than 2-3 minutes. Draft:Gaurav Dwivedi
[edit]Hello Jay,
Thank you for updating the reference citation for Gaurav Dwivedi in FTII page.
My draft for his wiki page has been rejected by previous reviewers.
I have not resubmitted it after last review. Can you please review it and give your opinion about the page and his notability. I will be adding more references.
Please help with your experienced opinion so that I can make his page better.
Thanks,
Prachi Vyas
PrachiVyas27 (talk) 15:48, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
- I did try to clean up the draft, but what the latest review said is still valid - the references
.. do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions)...
If you are able to find references with significant coverage (not interviews), then you may add them. Jay 💬 01:37, 26 May 2025 (UTC)- Thank you very much Jay for your time in reviewing my draft and editing. I will try to find more sources and also I will update one award nomination he had for best actor for short film Still Voices at an american film
- festival.
- Thank you,
- Prachi PrachiVyas27 (talk) 07:32, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
- There is no source that the Best Actor nomination was for him, and I have tagged it as {{citation needed}}. Jay 💬 06:04, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hello Jay,
- I am grateful and thankful to you for editing Gaurav Dwivedi's draft and including valuable information. I added more content today, added commercials with youtube links citations, which are commercial videos. Also added Award nominations section and references. Added page title.
- Can you please review it once more. Thank you for your time and consideration.
- Thanks and Regards,

- Hello Jay,
- Thank you for your time to refine my draft. I understand that references are needed to prove any information listed there. For his best actor nomination , I found it mentioned in this link : https://thereviewmonk.com/person/gaurav-dwivedi/
- why is this link not being considered as a reliable source.
- secondly he has done many commercials and that had been a testament for his modeling work. Can I add those again? PrachiVyas27 (talk) 12:10, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- In the reviewmonk page, towards the end it shows
.. Gaurav Dwivedi was nominated for the best actor award. Wikipedia ^ Show Less
That page uses Wikipedia itself as a source, so is not usable. I removed the commercials because the youtube links you added were primary sources, and the youtube account is unverified. It is the same with his Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts - they are all unverified. Typically, notable actors get their accounts verified for their fan base and to avoid impersonation. - Also, if you have an external connection with Gaurav Dwivedi, you have a WP:Conflict of interest and will have to disclose the same. See WP:DISCLOSE for details. Jay 💬 12:44, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hello Jay, Thank you for explaining it to me. I wanted to add commercials youtube links because he is seen in the commercial video and that is the proof that he actually acted in the commercial. Please suggest how can we have those added in his wikipedia page, if not youtube links.
- Also , I wanted to know that how to proceed to find reliable sources about someone’s nominations.
- Thanks,
- Prachi Vyas PrachiVyas27 (talk) 12:50, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- Moved the discussion to User talk:PrachiVyas27#Commercial ads and nominations. Jay 💬 13:27, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you Jay. For commercials I will search for more sources. And for nomination too. I think thats the only nomination I saw on google for him. PrachiVyas27 (talk) 13:47, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- And regarding that link you said is using wikipedia as a source, I dont think thats the case because that wikipedia link at the end of the article is redirecting to draft page but I didnot include any award information untill yesterday in the draft page.I first found this link on google and then used it as reference to update award nomination. So it is other way round. Please give your thoughts. I am not sure when this article was published. Your thoughts on this please 🙏
- Thank you,
- Prachi PrachiVyas27 (talk) 13:41, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- The wikipedia link at the end of the article is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaurav_Dwivedi , the article page, not the draft page. It used to be a Wikipedia article and has been deleted 3 times - in 2015 and 2017. In 2016, the article did mention the Best Actor nomination, see the web archive. In any case, the fact that a website relies on Wikipedia as a source, implies it is not reliable, and cannot be used. Jay 💬 13:58, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- Oh ok , got it. Thank you for explaining Jay. I thought it is redirecting to my draft page. PrachiVyas27 (talk) 14:02, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

Comment links
[edit]Your question at Special:Diff/1288296481 is answered by mw:Help:DiscussionTools#Talk pages permalinking: The link to a comment is available from its timestamp, in the signature. Clicking (or tapping on mobile) on the link copies the permalink to your clipboard
. It actually took me longer than I'd like to find this info; I'd discovered it simply because I was curious about the new formatting of the comment timestamps and clicked them. en-wiki documentation, such as Wikipedia:Signatures, has just a sentence without citing the more in-depth MediaWiki documentation (which also helpfully provides a brief summary of its implementation across Wikimedia wikis). I plan to do something about this [how difficult the MediaWiki page is to find] hopefully later today. Rotideypoc41352public (talk) 00:01, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

Interface administrator changes
- Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
- An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
- An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2025 to reduce the backlog of articles in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!
I will be in the process of accepting the draft, but the title is protected. Would you mind to unprotect the title to make way for move? Thanks. ToadetteEdit (7M articles) 20:48, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

- A new feature called Multiblocks will be deployed on English Wikipedia on the week of June 2. See the relevant announcement on the administrators' noticeboard.
- History merges performed using the mergehistory special page are now logged at both the source and destination, rather than just the source as previously, after this RFC and the resolution of T118132.
- An arbitration case named Indian military history has been opened. Evidence submissions for this case close on 8 June.
- Voting for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is open until 17 June 2025. Read the voting page on Meta-Wiki and cast your vote here!
- An Articles for Creation backlog drive is happening in June 2025, with over 1,600 drafts awaiting review from the past two months. In addition to AfC participants, all administrators and new page patrollers can help review using the Yet Another AFC Helper Script, which can be enabled in the Gadgets settings. Administrators' newsletter – August 2025
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2025).
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
- Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.
- Administrators can now restrict the "Add a Link" feature to newcomers. The "Add a Link" Structured Task helps new account holders get started with editing. Administrators can configure this setting in the Community Configuration page.
- The arbitration case Indian military history has been closed.
- South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as
All pages related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), broadly construed, including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups.
- The contentious topic designations for Sri Lanka (SL) and India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan (IPA) are folded into this new contentious topic.
- The community-authorized general sanctions regarding South Asian social groups (GS/CASTE) are rescinded and folded into this new contentious topic.
- South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as
- The arbitration case Article titles and capitalisation 2 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 31 July.
- The arbitration case Transgender healthcare and people has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 11 August.

Question for some redirects
[edit]I see you on redirect discussions, so thought to ask you this question. I saw this redirect discussion Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Rashtriya_Swayamsevak_Sangh_redirects_listed_at_Redirects_for_discussion and was looking into the target page and saw that it has 100+ redirects (look at last 100+ here) using various combinations of words (not sure if some are encyclopedia worthy terms) added by the same user who has done the nomination. Is this something that this encyclopedia allows? I am assuming good-faith but it sounds disruptive. Asteramellus (talk) 20:22, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
- I have seen such redirects, but have not encountered a discussion about redirects with extensive word combinations created by a user possibly on the same day. This can be a question for WT:Redirects for discussion. Jay 💬 17:30, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).
Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR
, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67) - See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.
Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options →
Enable the user info card
- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

- Starting on November 4, the IP addresses of logged-out editors are no longer being publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account associated with their edits.
- Administrators will now find that Special:MergeHistory is now significantly more flexible about what it can merge. It can now merge sections taken from the middle of the history of the source (rather than only the start) and insert revisions anywhere in the history of the destination page (rather than only the start). Override a new draft?
[edit]Jay, I see that an IP just created Draft:Adam the woo for a newly deceased YouTuber. I believe the spelling is incorrect, so I am presently working on Adam the Woo, as this is the spelling as it is being reported in reliable sources. Can you tell me what is the proper procedure in this case — i.e., is it more correct to promote the draft or allow me to publish my article — assuming of course that he is notable, which I believe he is. StonyBrook babble 06:47, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
- There can be multiple draft pages on the same topic either in draftspace or userspace. You could have created your own draft with the proper spelling, or enhanced the current or created directly in mainspace. In any case, now that it is in mainspace, the question is moot. Jay 💬 09:20, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
- It's six of one or a half dozen of the other, I guess. If the only difference is that I lose creator credit to the IP, then it's no bigee. I'm no better than the next human contributor (but the supercomputer pilfering all of our stuff? Well, that's a different matter!). StonyBrook babble 11:17, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
Sorry, but I guess I just missed you. My question was answered here. Cheers. StonyBrook babble 08:47, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
I think you deleted the article 10-Hydroxy Lycopodium alkaloids (not the redirect 10-Hydroxy ''Lycopodium'' alkaloids, the nominated redirect) by mistake. Needs to be restored? Steel1943 (talk) 16:32, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for informing. Restored. XFDCloser was facing problems because of the quotes, and I changed the section title at the RfD for the close to go through. I don't know why XFDCloser deleted the non-quoted title. Jay 💬 18:27, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
