Naval casualties and memorials
[edit]Hello. I am posting to your talk page because I noticed the post you made seven years ago here (sorry, I sometimes take a while to notice some things round here). While there might not be room or space in the main article for the elaboration you proposed there, would you have time to look at the wording currently used in List of ships named on the Tower Hill Memorial (e.g. regarding DEMS gunners and so on). Also see what I said on the talk page about the potential to find ships with articles that have been created since the list article was last updated. I wondered also if you might be interested in any work in including in the appropriate articles something on the memorial registers I mentioned here, and maybe also the Indian, Chinese and African merchant sailors I mentioned here? I mention this because you said in your talk page post 7 years ago: "to paraphrase Chief Brodie, we're gonna need a bigger 'easily parsed sentence.'" :-) Maybe something could be drafted on a talk page somewhere. No problem if you are editng in other areas now, but thought you might appreciate a follow-up even if many years later... If you are still involved in the WWI Forgotten Wrecks project, might I also interest you in the edit I made here related to one of those wrecks that has made the news recently because it was discovered? Trying to capture the vagaries of where naval and similar casualties end up being commemorated is not easy, and really requires proper secondary sources (rather than deep linking into databases, which I should not really have done). But the fact that the CWGC have now got to the stage of having photos of graves means that the three graves associated with that ship can be linked to. Not sure if the photos will ever be freely available, but others may have taken photos. Hope that made sense. Carcharoth (talk) 00:03, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for reminding me, I'd totally forgotten about this :) Let me refresh my memory first Robinvp11 (talk) 13:05, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
- Would you know where the casualties of SS Clan Macalister (1930) (part of the Dunkirk evacuation) would have been commemorated, or where best to look? Carcharoth (talk) 16:49, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- And the casualties from HMS Crispin (1940) and HMS Malvernian, as naval personnel, would if the bodies were lost to the sea, be on the three naval memorials? I am being silly. Found them here and here. And for the previous question about one of the Dunkirk ships, here on the Bombay/Chittagong 1939-1945 Memorial Roll of Honour. Carcharoth (talk) 17:10, 27 July 2025 (UTC)

One more post. I was not aware previously of the Chatby Memorial in Egypt. Came across it via SS Leasowe Castle. Carcharoth (talk) 18:26, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
Belligerent
[edit]The Irish Jacobites should be considered Belligerents as they were a clear and recognised party engaged in hostilities in the war, they are more than worthy of the title. Patrick Sarsfield Earl of Lucan is significant enough to be considered a commander in my opinion but I see why you think he shouldn't be so I wont argue about him Billybob the third1244 (talk) 03:16, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for your query. I’m providing more detail than needed, because this is a constant source of confusion for many editors.
- (a) Belligerent is a recognised legal entity, generally speaking a sovereign state, which has formally declared war on another Belligerent (as defined here).
- ‘’Recognised legal entity’’ excludes rebellions against central authority, which are classed as insurgencies, irrespective of whether they have established their own provisional governments. Many rebellions were supported by outside powers for their own purposes (eg the Camisards in France, frequent uprisings in Catalonia), but that doesn’t make them Belligerents.
- ‘’Formal declaration of war’’ is also required eg from 1618, France provided financial, diplomatic and even military support to anti-Habsburg forces during the Thirty Years War, but did not become a Belligerent until 1635 when it formally declared war on Spain and the HRE. Large numbers of Dutch troops fought against France in the 1740 to 1748 War of the Austrian Succession, but the Dutch Republic remained neutral until France declared war in 1747.
- (b) Participation; until late in the 19th century (and even beyond), most armies were multi-ethnic. For example, the Allied armies in the Nine Years War contained large number of exiled French Protestants, one of whom (Ligonier) later became C-in-C. This does not make French Huguenots a recognised Belligerent, nor does the presence of the Irish Brigade make Irish Jacobites one. A simple way to identify the difference between Participation and Belligerency is whether the entity involved was represented in the treaty that ended the war.
- Lastly, it is very common for editors to focus on the Infobox, which is supposed to summarise the article. As currently written, Sarsfield doesn’t appear in the body of the article, so per se he can’t be included in the list of commanders (and even then, he is not necessarily important enough to be included). Update the article FIRST, then the Infobox.
- Hope this makes sense. Robinvp11 (talk) 13:48, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
