A Thing About Libraries
[edit]You obviously have a thing for libraries, as most of the pages for the library systems in Georgia were made by you (with a few exceptions, like PINES, which was actually made before you made your account). Oddly, most of those pages weren't made until the 2010's. How did you come to know about these library systems? Why did the pages take so long to be made? 2601:C7:C280:14C0:4543:920:9C29:E65E (talk) 21:54, 30 September 2025 (UTC)
- It was mostly by chance. I read a biography on Andrew Carnegie, learned that he funded over 3000 libraries, wanted to learn more about them, and next thing you know I made a page for every system in the state. A lot of the research for the pages was done in-person and using physical materials and microfilm... in other words, references that are good for a page that aren't available online anywhere. So that's likely why it took so long for the pages to be made. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 21:58, 30 September 2025 (UTC)
- You did not make a page for every system in the state. Like I said before, other Wikipedia users made pages for some systems (the Cobb County Public Library System, the DeKalb County Public Library, the Fulton County Library System, the Gwinnett County Public Library, and PINES) before you even made your account (that's also true of the Smyrna Public Library, which isn't even part of a library system, and a couple more pages for other systems (the Middle Georgia Regional Library System, the Sequoyah Regional Library System, and the West Georgia Regional Library) were made by other users after you made your account. This shows that, even before you got into the scene, there were users with some knowledge about libraries. I wasn't specifically asking why it took so long for you to make the pages; I was actually wondering why it took so long for anyone in general to make the pages (particularly the ones made after 2005). On the subject on the pages that were made by other users after you made your account, could it be that you were planning to make those pages, but other users beat you to the punch? ~2025-32433-68 (talk) 23:10, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- There's no need to go all Sherlock Holmes on me. I didn't mean to claim credit for every single page. As you said, some were made before my tenure, so I thought in my reply it was implicit that I created all the rest. This is such a weird thing to get all aggressive over, to the point of italicizing your response and linking me pages as a "gotcha". Perhaps I should have been more careful with my language, but I have no reason to claim I made any pages that I didn't. Even pages like the Cobb County system which I authored 80% of I do not claim on my userpage. So just relax.
- In any regards, I already answered your main question. Why did the pages take so long to be created? Mostly because most of the references required for pages on Wikipedia were not available online (or they weren't available at the time). I spent dozens of hours poring over microfilm and print-only references to build a lot of those pages. Why did no one else do it before me? I haven't the foggiest clue. It's a niche topic in a niche subject which requires niche knowledge. I think Georgia is the only state that has all their library systems represented on Wikipedia. So the enthusiasm for people making library system pages seems to be approximately one person on this entire site, otherwise all 49 other states would be similarly represented.
- Such a weird reply lol, this really caught me off guard. Hope this answers your question. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 23:55, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
