Altair (ook Alpha Aquilae of α Aql genoem) is die helderste ster in die sterrebeeldArend en die 12de helderste ster aan die naghemel. Dit is tans in die G-wolk: ’n nabygeleë interstellêre wolk, ’n versameling van gas en stof.[9][10]
Altair roteer vinnig, met ’n spoed by sy ewenaar van sowat 286 km/s.[4] Waarnemings by die Palomar-sterrewag het gewys Altair is nie sferies nie, maar plat by die pole vanweë sy hoë rotasiespoed.[14] Ander interferometriese studies met verskeie teleskope in die infrarooi het dit bevestig.[4]
Die ster se Bayer-naam is "Alpha Aquilae". Die tradisionele naam, "Altair", word sedert die Middeleeue gebruik en is ’n afkorting van die Arabiese frase النسر الطائرan-nasr aṭ-ṭāʼir, "die vlieënde arend".[15]
