Yusuf Islam (gebore Steven Demetre Georgiou, 21 Julie 1948), algemeen bekend onder sy voormalige verhoognaam Cat Stevens, is 'n Britse sanger-liedjieskrywer.[1] Sy debuutalbum Matthew and Son van 1967 het die top 10 in die Verenigde Koninkryk bereik, en die album se titelliedjie Matthew and Son is in nommer 2 op die Britse Singles Chart genommer. Sy albums Tea for the Tillerman (1970) en Teaser and the Firecat (1971) het albei platinumstatus bereik in die VSA.[2] Sy musikale styl bestaan uit folk-, pop-, rock- en Islamitiese musiek.[3][4][5]
Sy album Catch Bull at Four was in in 1972 vir drie weke lank nommer een op die Billboard 200 en vyftien weke nommer een op die Australiese ARIA-treffersparade.[6][7] Hy wen in 2005 en 2006 twee ASCAP-liedjieskrywerspryse vir The First Cut Is The Deepest, en dié liedjie word later 'n treffer vir vier verskillende kunstenaars.[8] Van sy ander treffers is Father and Son, Wild World, Peace Train, Moonshadow, en Morning Has Broken. In 2007 ontvang hy die Britse Akademie se Ivor Novello-prys vir Uitstaande Liedversameling.[9]
In Desember 1977 het Stevens hom tot Islam bekeer,[10] en die naam Yusuf Islam in die volgende jaar aangeneem. In 1979 skenk hy al sy kitare om vir liefdadigheid opgeveil te word,[11] en staak sy musiekloopbaan om homself vir opvoedkundige en filantropiese werk in die Moslem-gemeenskap aan te wend. Hy was gewikkel in 'n langdurige omstredenheid rakende opmerkings wat hy in 1989 gemaak het oor die fatwa op die skrywer Salman Rushdie. Hy het twee eredoktorsgrade en toekennings vir die bevordering van vrede ontvang van twee organisasies wat deur Michail Gorbatsjof gestig is.
In 2006 maak hy na 28 jaar 'n terugkeer na popmusiek met die album An Other Cup.[12][13] Met die vrystelling van dié album en die daaropvolgende albums gebruik hy die verhoognaam Yusuf.[13] In 2009 stel hy die album Roadsinger vry en in 2014 Tell 'Em I Gone. Hierna onderneem hy sy eerste Amerikaanse toer sedert 1976.[14] In 2014 word hy by die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ingelyf.[15] Op 12 September 2016 begin sy tweede Amerikaanse toer sedert sy herlewing en hy tree op in 12 intieme vertonings.[16]
