الشيخ أزهَر الدُليمي هو العقل المدبر لهجوم 20 يناير في كربلاء، حيث هاجم مقاتلون من جيش المهدي يتحدثون الإنجليزية ويرتدون الزي العسكري الأمريكي ويحملون أسلحة أمريكية مقر قيادة عسكرية مشتركة، مما أسفر عن مقتل خمسة جنود أمريكيين.[1] [2] [3]تمَّ تعقبه وقتله على يد القوات الأمريكية في 19 مايو 2007 في مدينة الصدر.[4]

في 22 أكتوبر 2010، ذكرت صحيفة نيويورك تايمز أنَّه في تسريب وثائق حرب العراق، وصف محللو المخابرات الأمريكية سبب اعتقادهم أنَّ الدليمي قد تمَّ تدريبه على "الفنون المظلمة للعمليات شبه العسكرية" من قبل إيران وحزب الله وفي 25 أكتوبر 2010، نشرت مجلة السياسة الخارجية مقالاً يشكك في الاستنتاجات التي توصلت إليها صحيفة نيويورك تايمز من الوثائق المسربة [5][6]

وفقاً لكيمبرلي كاجان في كتابها الطفرة: تاريخ عسكري أنَّ أزهر الدليمي كان "منفذ هجمات وزارة الصحة وهجمات كربلاء".[7] كما نسب بيل روجيو ، الذي كتب في مجلة الحرب الطويلة الهجوم على مركز التنسيق المشترك في محافظة كربلاء إلى أزهر الدليمي.[8] [9]

وفقاً لكتاب مارك أوربان عن القوات الخاصة في العراق، فرقة العمل السوداء، فإنَّ الوثائق التي تمَّ الاستيلاء عليها في 20 مارس 2007، عندما تمًَ القبض على قيس الخزعلي وعلي موسى دقدوق، وصفت دور الدليمي في هجوم كربلاء وقدَّمت معلومات كافية للقوات الخاصة من أجل الغارة التي قُتل فيها الدليمي.[10]
