El maithili (मैथिली maithilī) o maijilí ye una de la familia de llingües indo-aries les cualos son parte de la gran familia indoeuropea. Falar nel estáu indiu de Bihar y nel este de la rexón Terai de Nepal un total de 24 millones de persones. Los llingüistes consideren que'l maithili ye un idioma índicu oriental y por tanto distintu al hindi o indostánicu cual l'índicu central.

El maithili consideróse un dialeutu del hindi, según del bengalí y de fechu clasificóse como llingua madre del hindi nel censu d'India. En 2003, el maithili llogró'l estatus de llingua independiente de la India. Esiste un movimientu pa brinda-y estatus oficial vía l'octavu artículu de la constitución por que pueda ser usáu en educación, gobiernu o otros contestos oficiales.
