Падчас 1-й англа-сікхскай вайны 1845–46 гадоў Кашмір быў заваяваны англічанамі і ўключаны ў склад Брытанскай Індыі на правах васальнага княства.
У 1846 годзе перададзены брытанскімі ўладамі ва ўпраўленне раджы княства Джаму (за кампенсацыю ў 7,5 млн. рупій), які атрымаў тытул махараджы княства Джаму і Кашмір.
У 1946 годзе княства Джаму і Кашмір атрымала самакіраванне ў межах 1846 года[1].
